I'm slowly getting enough money to start up my bedroom studio. These are the things I plan to buy...
Behringer UB1204 Pro Eurorack 12 Input Mixer
Samson Resolv 65 Reference Monitors
M-Audio Studiophile BX5 Powered Monitors
Tascam US-122 USB/Audio Midi Interface
MidiMan Oxygen 8 Midi Controller
anything you would replace? Keep in mind I'm on a budget and don't want to go much outside this range. I plan on getting some hardware synths next time I get some cash (which explains the mixer).
While I'm on the subject, should the monitors be hooked to the mixer or audio/midi interface output? I'm not sure if there are any latency issues, so please help me out with that.
thanks for your help |

actually, I'm thinking about changing the Tascam Interface to an M-Audio Audiophile USB Midi/Audio Interface because the Tascam doesn't have xlr or trs inputs. The Audiophile does have trs inputs.
If I run a trs from the mixer to the interface, will there be quality loss? I ask because the back of the mixer says that the xlr outputs are the main ones and the trs are "alt". Can someone clear this up for me? |

In general I would stay away from Behringer mixers. Several friends have had them over the years (including the Eurorack series) and pretty much all of them have complained that they are noisy. I have a Mackie 1402-VLZ Pro which is also a 12 channel mixer and it is great, not to mention built like a tank.
M-Audio stuff seems to be hit of miss. Alot of people have trouble with the Audiophile USB interfaces (I have watched a friend's crap out briefly in the middle of live sets on numerous occassions). Other people have had no problem with them, so set up could be an issue in numerious cases. I personally have an older pci Delta 410 and have never had a single problem with it. Is the computer you are using a laptop or a desktop? If its a desktop I would try and stay away from USB audiocards if possible, since pci cards are much more stable, have less latency, etc etc...
As for monitors, if you are running through a mixer, it is pretty much standard to run you monitors out of the mixer as well, although I'm sure there are as many routing variations as their are people making music.

I'll second that. Both of the points. In the college where i studied i witnessed the weirdest combination. Pro Tools system that was routed to Behring Eurorack mixer. What a silly combination.

Although more expensive, maybe you can consider BX8 monitors? They have bigger frequency response, and they're a bit stronger. Also check out Tannoy Reveal Active.
I have an Oxygen 8 and I really like and recomend it.
Also agree about the Behringer, but Mackie is really expensive - so maybe you can try with yamaha mixers - I think its the good ratio of money paid and quality. |

I think instead of buying two pairs of monitors you should by just a pair of better ones, like genelec, mackie or dynaudio...
And instead of buying a mixer, an audio interface and a midi controler, why don´t you go for something like yamaha 01x? that will give you all of those things in a single package, plus effects.... |

oh, I didn't even notice I listed two. I meant to say that "I can't decide between the two sets of monitors." I have heard good and bad about both and I havnt had the chance to listen to either of them. |

screw the mixer - you dont need it.
add that cash to better monitors - get event stuff - best 'cheap' monitors.
dont get a usb sound card - pci instead (unless u have a laptop) |

I totally agree. If the soundcard you buy has lots of inputs and outputs (8 in and 8 out is quite enough) you don't need a mixer. I bought one and I never used it. How many hardware synths are you planning to buy in the future? For up to two synths you will be covered with an 8 in 8 out soundcard.
