To make this quick and simple:

https://soundcloud.com/comingsoon12/wait-for-it

Question 1

I would like to know how the artist achieved the bassline at 55 seconds in the sample?

It seems to be a very low pitched bass with a low cut-off, the bass also seems to pump.... could this be sidechaining?

Question 2

What is the instrument used just before the break, starting at 42 seconds.

Thanks in advanced

1. Sounds like a regular sawtooth with long attack and some saturation, nothing special or difficult. Could be sidechaining yes, but it also has some pitchbend.

I was not totally impressed by the track even though I have heard some other Coming soon stuff that made me listen several times.

2. Sounds like a small percussive tom tom/ bongo/ pitch shifted conga or timpani or, rather, a synthesised version of above mentioned instruments. An FM synth or granular synthesis synth can achieve similar sounds if you do not want to play around with pitch shift and reverb.

Edit: second thought is that it is two different instruments, one percussive drum (pitch shifted or eq:ed) and one xylophone-type of instrument. In progressive it often is one of those somewhere.

1- I would say an attack on the envelope, or the side chain.

You can make your beat pump easy with compressors, use one sidechained by the kick, and another straight on the kick+bass buss reacting to the kick peaks, and adjust the compressor's release to taste (pumping requires longer release values than a "glued" compression).

2- yep I agree it sounds like a percussion. You can make these easy with (Ableton) Collision, or any capable synth for that matter. Just play with short envelopes, and remember that a "plim" has a p, an l, an i and an m., not just a "peeee", so use your modulation envelopes to shape it's timbre. Some slight reverb to put it in place and your done           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
