hehe. Last time I checked there was no other good soundcard at this price range :) and since I'm not a pro, S.B Live will do the job (for a while, anyway).
I have a Plextor 16x too, BTW :) |

anyone know what is the difference between Asus A7M266 and Asus A7V266 ? i'm going for the second one with an Athlon 1.4 and 512 ddr ram.
is it true that athlon 1.4 are heating up dangerously ?
thanx, ioannis |

Check the asus site, I think it's http://www.asus.com.tw
About heating up, any Athlon heats up, not just the 1400. If you're getting an Athlon, invest a little more into cooling fans, cause burning your CPU isn't fun. |

the full title is : Asus A7A-266 ALI M1647 Chipset DDR & SDRAM MoBo SoA
do you think this will be ok with the Athlon 1.4 ?

I think there is one only for SDRAM (A7V133), one for SDRAM and DDR (I think it is A7V266), and there is the A7M266, that supports DDR only and which I think it better.
about the heating thing, it's true. but as long as you buy a good CPU cooler unit and a good case (but really good, no shit), you don't suppose to have any problems ... |

1. A7M266 A7A266 A7V266 are all ASUS boards using different architecture in order to accommodate different ChipSets and their different options. A7M266 is using the good old AMD 760/761 Chipset A7A266 is using the wonderfull ALiMAGik1 Chipset A7V266 is using the first generation KT266 VIA Chipset.
From all of them only the A7A266 can use both DDR and SDRAM, but today their price is equivalent so this feature is insignificant. (DDR memory can boost performance up to 30% so there is no question whatsoever !!)
The superior MOBO is the A7V266 VIA KT266 (Benchmark wise) But that can vary depends on use.
Any-way KT266 is also quite old (computers standards :) ) and VIA has recently lunched the KT266A which is by-far todays most powerful chipset.
2. About AMD heating up: AMD Athlon heating levels are not very different from the Intel P4 (with the new core) what lacking is the excellent Protection Unit found in the P4 and P3. in the P4 there is a speed throttle that slows down the CPU in case of overheating while in P3 the protection system simply lock down the CPU. In AMD there is no such protection.
Nevertheless I will still undoubtedly go for the AMD (performance as well as Price wise), just notice the FAN. And remember - AMD 1.4Ghz is equal to a P4 1.6Ghz and cost much much less.
P.S Video of an AMD Athlon burning live! :) http://www12.tomshardware.com/images/THG_CPU_Cooling.zip

AMD 1.4 is more like P4 2.0, I think :) |

That is not quite accurate i'm afraid, and greatly relay on the circumstances.
Of course you can benchmark a 133 SDRAM P4 2000Mhz with an 266 DDR AMD 1.4 and the AMD will surely Win. But that is due to the fact that AMD based systems (MOBOS and chipsets with ddr support) are better these days then the P4 based equipment. Not necessarily due to Athlon Processor superiority. (P4 at those high clock rates will beat the superb athlon if tested on an equal setup)
But then, even if you had any doubts about which processor will go 0.0125 ms faster they are all vanish once you look again at the price! :) (AMD win, no doubt about it) |

yep.
I just watched a Tom's Hardware Guide movie about what happens when you remove the HeatSync fan from the CPU.
the P4 and P3 servived, all the AMD's blew up, AMD 1400 fucked up the main board too.
but again, who the hell removes the HeatSync fan ? :)
I think I've heard about a ZDNet test that shows that AMD 1.4 is equal to P4 2.0. |
