So guys... I have finished my first track and it soudns very, very low (volume).
I worked on cubase and them I mixdown all tracks (midi and audio) to an Audio track (wave). I converted it in mp3 192kbps file. The track became so low!!!
I don´t want to "mastering" it. I just want the people could be able to hear my music...
Any idea?? Thanks!

Check again ur mix levels and get a overall volume not above 0db but as loud as possible.
Then use some limiting before making mp3s of ur tracks. U can use Wavelab and a limiter like Elephant 2 or a waves limiter, there are lot of nice limiters, like the free kjearhus limiter.
Peace

Take this file to any audio editing or sequencer application to check what is the output singal level, dB meter tool. Make all your track as closest as possible to 0dB. Limiting isn't reall matter since all peaks above 0dB will be limited by their own.

Willy, that's not good advice. Digital clipping (which is what you're recommending) is one of the worst sounds there is.
IMO Input has the right idea - except (personally) I'd put L2 across the file in Sound Forge or Wavelab (ie. after it's been mixed down), set the output level to -0.1dB and lower the threshold until you're getting 3dB gain redution maximum.

It was general advice for someone who only wants to make volume higher. Anyway good that you remind me of these distorted noises. |

may be normalize is inough? that would be easy..
may be there is 2-3 sounds that are way high over alll the others? so they can fuck up your mix..
may be too much sub and bass in all the sounds so it takes way too much mix space?
i had all those over time of beggining..
-8db/-5db for the kick is what made my mix "right" its just as you want to hear it.then perccussion sound reasonable around -9db/-12db. and the mix is not too low neither too high.
check all channels and may be to compress the higher (volume) one.
hp filter for all sounds (leads pads drums etc. not kick tho (also possible) )will give much more clearity. i think around 150-300hz is oki for most . www.sattelbattle.com

Yes.. Set the dB levels as Tsabeat (sattel battle) said and then work it on soundforge or wavelab and use your directx plugins on it (as Colin said)...
Personally I do it exactly like this.. After the final mix I open the compact .wav in a sound editor, maximize it and then limit it gently |

Thanks guys for your help!
but...
I work on Ibook G4 and I don´t know any free limiter soft... After cubase I use to convert the file (wave/mp3) on Itunes... If anyone knows any kind of free soft that could help me on this job...(even because I can convert only to 192kbps, not over...)
I followed your tips and EQ all tracks around 0dB (the bass less than that, the master channel a bit over...) It makes no difference. The final result was the same (volume).
The only thing I did that have changed the final volume was using compressor and limiter (VST Dinamics - master channel). But I did not like the result actually.
A friend of mine told me that this problem could be my internal sound card - not enough power...

The power of the soundcard has absolute nothing to do with your mixdown problems...
Ok, to make it clear:
1. track in cubase ... sounds good and loud
2. mixdown to wave ... sounds ???
3. convert to mp3 ... sounds low
Did you compare all 3 steps on your own monitors or step1 on your monitors and 2&3 on different stereo? |

Remember that using too much limiting will kill the punchiness.....
If the track is well mixed then you can just gain some volume and it will sound louder and still well balanced
if its badly mixed then it wont matter if you add more volume, the problem is the balance....
often you only need to add some volume to different elements to make it sound more full... its important that the sound palette is filling the frequency spectrum.. maybe you have carved out too much good frequencies in the mix, making it sound lifeless or low....try and bypass all EQ´s and redo it...
Is the bass and kick at a resonable volume... you should be able to turn the volume real high and the kick should not sound distorted or too heavy... the bass should not rumble too much....
sometimes i use a multiband compressor like C4 on the bass track just to get that rumble away... Most of the times i dont want to take away the punch from the kick with a compressor so i only affect the bass, sometimes its best to treat some instruments on their own.
anyway try to take away all dynamic effects and be real cautious when applying them.... maybe you are killing too muich dynamics and its sounds flat instead of punchy..
by the way, frequency clashing can take away some energy from the mix making it sound low in volume... like Sattel Battle said..
an example of this could be if you have a bass, now cut some low frequencies from it and it will sound clearer in volume... so look out for those unnecessary frequencies they will steal power...
good luck...
and try Magneto on the master out, it will add some nice and warm flavour...

Icodon, the W1 Limiter is a Mac freeware clone of the Waves L1. It does exactly the same thing. Download it here http://www.macmusic.org/softs/view.php/lang/EN/id/3092/
and follow Colin's recommendations for usage. |
