Swing/shuffle is kinda tricky, because i want my percussion to follow the groove of the song - it can sound somehow untight if the percussion has a different groove than the track..

Humanizing is mostly randomization of parameters such as velocity. This can lead to the percussion getting a much more dynamic feel, instead of just having the congas fire away at 127velo all the time (a human would have a hard time making every drumhit be at same level, so a too stiff percussion can sound rigid.. or like a drummachine - both can be fine, depends on the track i guess).

I wouldn't say i use it to make it sound more 'human', but to make it more organic and dynamic. But often i just use the mouse to mess around with velocity values. This way i can use the velo values to 'accent' or 'ghost' some notes i choose myself - i like this better than FL just randomizing.           - Making Denmark a nastier place since 1974

I only use swing on techno tunes...well have used it in trance tunes but only very slightly.
Apple loops library involve loops that have been played live and recorded with mics. using them is my humanizing bit.

Peace out.

i find Humanizing good when it had some groove, but not out of syncro , it have to stay a bit transparent , if it sound the same as in a band when someone is out of syncro , even if it s just a few notes it sux and get disturbing

I use a lot of shuffle in House music and Techno. The debut Elysium album had shuffle hats in ever tune.

i've never used humanise, but swing on hihats can sometimes sound more natural and fit into the groove better than perfectly timed.

for adding variety i don't always quantise after recording from the midi keyboard. i think it's superior to just randomising the whole thing (humanise)

i love messing with timing a little to give a more organic feel.
sometimes i just use shuffle.. makes it easy for all synths and drums to stay in groove..
but more often i just take the grid off when i'm editing midi and move it by hand to the exact 'right' place and for the right length. this gets you a truly 'human' feel.

I like to play my percussion parts, that makes them sound more live, it's more fun and u don't need to mess around with velocities later on.

Also I try to tweak the automation parameters live from the controller.           http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/dreaddean-patterns
