Human Blue – Diskovery Channel (Chillcode)

The latest dancefloor productions from Human Blue has dissapointed me consequently with this chill attempt i was expect better quality from Dag Wallin.

Indeed my expectations were partly satisfied with Diskovery Channel as he finds back some nice melodies & harmonies. Nevertheless the clubby (a bit cheesy) sound he has developped recently in his dancefloor stuffs, also impacts by moment this chill opus like in Lost Time or it can get boring by an overuse of vocoder like in Communicate.

When Dag is at his best inspiration, he can provides more complex chill structures & soundscapes : Outback (the best tune of the album for me) or Organic with unexpected percussions.
In this track, you’re penetrating a warm & fizzy natural water source. Take your palms, your mask & your 2 oxygen bottles & now get ready for a little dive exploration. But don’t go too deep coz the sirens won’t never let you come back on the ground, unless you decided to start a second aquatic life.

Diskovery Channel is a nice chill album but not essential ; otherwise Miro did, once again, a nice job with the cover here.

Chillcode Records based in Germany has become one of my favourite chill out/ambient labels lately, releasing one impressive album after the other. Now they are out with a new album done by Human Blue (Dag Wallin) from Sweden, who is a talented musician most known for his two strong progressive trance albums on Spiral Trax Records. But, he has also shown some great talent within the chill style, especially on the first Ease Division compilation on Spiral Trax released in 2002, which was one of my favourite tracks of all times. Here he delivers an album full of chilled, beautiful soundscapes.

Human Blue "Diskovery Channel" Chillcode Records 2005 (CHILLCD004)

1. Communicate
2. Ocean’s One
3. Organic
4. Spectral
5. Wonderworld
6. Outback
7. Riddle Rhythm
8. Lost Time

This guy has his own way of making totally dreamy, beautiful melodies and vibes. The entire album has a floating vibe, with mostly relaxed down tempo beats going in a pleasent tempo. The first track brings us right into dreamland, with some twisted, beautiful vocals and a rich soundpicture. I am impressed by how dreamy this guy manage to make his tracks, without falling over to any cliche or cheesy, too easy digestible chill. The second track continues the totally deep vibes, here with a stronger down tempo beat. Wonderful. Track 3 takes us into some slightly darker areas, with a little bit more psychedelic soundpicture and more beats. Great track, but not among my favourites on this album. Track 4 is one of the deepest tracks on the album, and one of my favourites here. Totally mystic and beautiful. Trippy, but chilling at the same time. Fantastic! Half through the album, we come back to some lighter vibes again, still with very mystic, floating vibes. Totally chilling and melodic. Track 6 brings us into a bit more experimental journey. Something for chilling out under the sun. Track 7 is a really deep, ambient track with almost melancholic vibes. After a while, a beat starts pumping in a pleasant tempo. Floating beautiful sounds with a pumping drift. Another masterpiece. The last track he he gives us on this album is my favourite here. This one is as relaxing as it can get. We get a vibe that probably could make even an elephant become emotional. Fantastic finish on the album.

This album is one of the absolute best albums I have heard this year! Human Blue proves again what a musical talent he is, with a great ear, not only for progressive trance, but also for deep, relaxing electronic music. Recommended!

Morpheus Music Review

STYLE
Downbeat atmospheres and digital flights of fancy. Human Blue makes abundant use of repeating motifs and vaporous synths to create slowly evolving structures that gradually build to the point of being driven along by languid programmed beats. Drawn out introductions feature ambient explorations where waves of sound are allowed drift and float. The clear, rich, interwoven layers of electronica swell little by little into hypnotic revolutions, thickening as new voices enter, effects interject or additional melodic phrases appear. Diskovery Channel avoids a lot of dramatic chordal developments, instead following the trance tradition of embellishing simple chord sequences that repeat and shift with each repetition. Vocoder speech and some wordless utterances provide occasional organic elements in a primarily synthetic series of soundworlds.

MOOD
Dreamy and trance-inducing, cyclic patterns slowly morphing with spellbinding clarity. This CD has a very contemporary sound, showcasing a lush range of bright electronica with sparkling production. The mesmeric tone is primarily maintained through balmy beats, restful and soothing - but the tempo picks up in places to a pumping dance-floor regularity. Most tracks are quite long allowing for unhurried progressions, where Human Blue's understated melodies and rolling arpeggiators can unfurl with leisurely grace.

ARTWORK
Warm sands flood every panel of this package. On the front two fantasy tin cans are linked together with an electrified strand - on the reverse of the booklet one can is faced toward the viewer like a primitive speaker transmitting the musical energy that sparkles through the cord. On the rear jewel case the tracklisting is interwoven with another snaking can phone line - this time set against an orange sky-mirage, an image that is more fully expanded within. At the heart of the booklet is a dream world of sandy spires floating amid infinite dunes set against a swimming yellow sunset.

OVERALL
Previously a part of Swedish Psy-Trance project Logarhythm Dag Wallin's solo material is described by his label as "deepblue downbeat spheres". Human Blue has built up a reputation through appearances on a number of compilation CDs in recent years. This complete debut is released on Chillcode Records and maintains a restful, synthetic indolence throughout.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS ALBUM
Diskovery Channel aims at a similar audience to Chillcode's other releases - ambience with beats, dance floor aesthetics applied to relaxation music.

Yup, after the (to my taste anyway) somewhat disappointing Entheogenic album, Chillcode strikes again with this great release. In sound it's a lot like Matenda's release on Chillcode, with the difference that Human Blue sounds dreamier. I like this album a lot. Only track I found a little less to my liking was the first, with the vocoder sample, which was a bit overused in my opinion. Still, a quality release for those that like their chillout dreamy and without a lof of ethnic chanting and influences like that. Chillcode has a good habit of releasing great electronic chillmusic. Here's hoping they keep it up, since the 'ethnic' chillout market has been overflowing since some time.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

Human Blue
"Diskovery Channel"

got into German Chill Out Charts
on position 5 in the first week!

Together with the Entheogenic Album
you have got two artists in the chartlist
at the same time.

Great Job Thomas!
