If the build ups are too long i get bored. I think its very important to maintain interest in the buildup.
Still keeping some kind of rhythm going.
It can be a real killer when a big build up comes up and the whole dancefloor stop dancing, just waiting for it to hit.

i like myself a good build up, but its hit and miss for me if its to long i get anxious...if its to short i get caught off guard. I agree its more of a matter of taste also build ups do sound better with a melody i will agree with that 100%.
in production- it can be fun working on a build up if it flows well with the track. but if its to "big" and to long then i find i get board with working on the track and i want to go work on something better and more interesting.

i dont mind them. but if every track in a deejays 2h set got a 1min break in it, i cant really get into dancing mode coz of these stops. and i dont dance or wave around like a flag in the wind when theres a long break or buildup

I love them!!! but I love cheese full-on and dance like there's no tomorrow!! but if you are into dark or high-tech or forest music (you know that great psychedelic music) then, they are out of the question, they are even not legal on the dark scene, they will burn you at the stake for trying to pull one of those in the dance floor.

Not really a fan of long breakdowns in psytrance. PoM has the right idea - in Goa, some long enchanting melodies just soaring over the dancefloor can be just awesome for a minute or two before the kick comes back.
But psytrance... psytrance is a more in-your-face assault of the senses. I like short breakdowns, sounds and fx constantly twisting my this way and that without letting up too much. I want to keep exploding on the dance floor. Some of the coolest live sets I've seen hardly have a single long, wanker breakdown. They just keep the energy pumping on and on.
Also, someone else mentioned this: I like it when the kick and the bass stick around and the artist still builds and builds on top of that. You got all your hats, all your melodies, grooves, perc, rhythm going? Fuckit, sometimes just go for broke: keep adding more. And more. Sometimes, on the dancefloor, I just want them to lay it on thick. And if you're doing a liveset, these are the moments you want to pick up on. If your audience really likes what's going on, give it to them. Feed their passion.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

I think that what comes after the build up is far more important, much like the "drop" in Dubstep.
I was at a festival a few years back here in Ireland and this dude had a build-up of woe going up, up, up and then...when it dropped it was just boring and plodding. I nearly fell asleep after the third time he did it.
Then again, at the same festival, a different dude just ripped the place to pieces coz what came next was just great and the place went totally bucko.

i totally understand what you mean. thats one of the main problems i have with minimal. huuuge build up, noises everywhere. you are getting ready to stomp the ground. almost there, almost there, oh yeah this will be a huge orgasm once the drop lands. i can feel it oh yeah.... wait, thats it?are you kidding me? it sounds like the beat before the build up! and like the last track. and like the one before the last one. then i normaly flee from the dance floor and get something to drink

yeah it really depends on the track/set. I have seen sets which seemed to consist only of breaks and buildups and that I find fucking annoying.
If the track is good then one good buildup with a break is ok if it fits in....

Yeaaah i feel the same way about!. That is the most turn off there is. But then there is also fucking good minimal artist which know exactly what theyre doing with their 4 minutes long buildups and just keep the drive going up and up and up until the magic hits.

depends very much on the style. I only listen to high tech stuff and build is very essential in this. If they track is well made it should feel like a constant acceleration/build up.

Kindzadza, Cosmo, Osom, Haiko, Furious, etc. depend on huge buildups, but it's not in a conventional full on way (dropping everything, pitching and filtering up sounds for a minute, release the beat), but messing and playing with the track.
(although my music tens to have a final build,) I like it when it's interesting, no matter what it has. Keep it interesting and it'll be good.

i dont like really really long builds, but a good build in the right place can sound awsome. i agree with most of you guys "short and sweet followed by more amazing bassline"

nice topic.
this is what happens to me, so it has to with personal taste, the problem with buildups is not the buildup itself but what happens after, when the dj or live starts to play the first buildups must be good and not break the flow of the rising, its like Killik said about minimal, very disappointing after the buildup, if that happens i usualy loose interest for the rest of the set, its like i loose the confidence that the man behind the decks is not going to fail me On psytrance i like shorter breaks and builds, on progressive i like if the set is build around one big up, all connected never really letting u go down.

nice topic indeed, personaly i m not patient enough for build ups maybe i don't like them much, but everything can be useful if it is justified properly, a huge build up could match before an also huge and powerfull last part of a track combined with one or more of the following or past sounds with big circle maybe..
