I think the word LIVE is standing for live and not for use a player to play one audiofile.
The word DJ is standing for playing music.
How ever. With mp3 software, with cubase, with cd player, with turntables.....
Do you know any kind of rockband
wich plays a liveact with a laptop??
Ok, electr. music and instrumental music are diffent things, but live is live. And DJ is DJ.

let`s call it : " alive dj set...." its alot better when their alive...
actually i think the combination of the 2 is the best. and artists who perform "live" and do absoloutley nothing except press play ( i`ve even seen one who played "amazing sounds and melodies" on a synth which was in mute the whole show...) should stop doing so or just be ashamed. if your dj`ing... why not say so.... and for goodness sake.. mix a few tracks on a cdj or vinyl or whatever ... but at least have the decency to do the mix live... if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

No, no no no no...
thats all not satisfying.
its not live ok, but its no DJ. DISCJOKEY?
where is the disc? there is no disc.
there are digital files, played by a digital live-sequencer, there are additional loops (percussion, fx, pads) and routed vst-effects manipulated by extern midicontrollers. would be no problem to add a synth with and play midi too. ableton live makes many things possible and i just realised 30% of full potential. this all has nothing more to do with just Djing.
anyways djs dont like people which dont dj and call theirselfes djs. and i will respect that and try to find a nother describtion of what i am doing.
in case that i will play 40%-80% of my own trax (depends on the crowd/party/lineup) i think about just calling it LIVE/DJ not a real good describtion but thats what i ask you here...
anyways...
the general meaning of the crowd that many liveacts are not live i just can say that such "livesets" are the essence of a work for weeks before the set, sometimes monthes and often years of endless producing and working with the maschines at home.
people sound like talking about artists which does only press the play-button thats it, offcourse a liveset is always the result of hard work no matter how much they realy edit on stage, and how much the pre-edit in the studio. i played such plug-and play sets too. i also played real (i mean realy real) livesets too. last but not least the most easy and relaxed pressing-one-button-game is DJing. please give more respect to live-artists even when you think there are not realy live. a liveset is anyway just to 70% possible. every person just has 2 hands.
ever seen a gig kicking the kick, playing the bass, playing the hihats, rolling the synthnob, keeping the faders and triggering 1/16notes into the keyboards (all 100% tight, the rest is shuffle )
... impossible
and about the thing playing synthies which are muted, thats realy not very intelligent and experienced indeed but its not to feel ashamed realy. the people which make me realy feel different is when i see djs which have tons of illegal copies and only 1-2 original discs from 100 but usually no one cares and this the real shit (because often everyone is doing)
good night

I guess the important thing to remember about live sets are:
1. Are you playing your own material?
2. Do the tracks sound different in some way than if you were to play the tracks on cd? (extra drum loops, more synths, etc)
3. Are you putting on a show for the crowd as well?
Of course it's a lot of work to make the music, but you could just as easily play a cd with your own stuff on there instead of attaching a "live" so you could charge more $$$... My opinion is if you are going to play live, then do something in real time. I've done press play sets too, but in the end it's not that fulfilling to me to do so.. I'd rather rig up a couple vsts in Ableton and some drum loops and sound fx and hit those all on the fly on top of my tracks so that no two live sets are exactly alike...

I do something kind of like what you talk about. I will DJ using 2 Dennon CD decks. I will also play sequenced & live synths from my laptop, as well as trigger samples from my laptop, & from CD.My partner plays a keyboard completely live, no sequencing.
Although I'm not a stickler about it, I usually refer to it as 'Hybrid-PA', as it is a hybrid of all 3- DJ, Live PA, and Live.
Feel free to check out how it sounds at our website: www.DharmaLab.com.
Plenty of pictures & music for download. Videos from NYE 2005 show a bit more. We frequently invite other musicians to play with us too. Lots of fun!

yeah, "hybrid" sounds nice indeed.
and you mix 2-3 cds + livesynth + labtop-triggering??
respect! i guess you need good routine to stay the head of the maschines. |

we have a guy here in Toronto who called his sets "hybrid" his set-up is a laptop with ableton live
and a bunch of synths that he tweaks, he plays his own stuff and remixes others peoples tracks live, so to call it a hybrid set seems very accurate .

A few names you could call the 'performance':
"Digital Mix"
"Digital live mix"
"live hybrid mix"
"man on laptop playing own music and others music"
"Mantik and friends"
"Mantik's Music Mega-Mix"
peace
