initially dark psy was called Night music. A night set was typecasted by horror sounds. Then I guess the Goths came to our Night sessions and felt that it was bordering with the Dark Metal of sorts eerie and evil. Then they took over Night Psy became Dark Psy...also Night is usually Dark so it worked fine with psytrancers...but what happened to Twilight Psy...the psy you play between 5am-7am..i love twilight & dawn...dusk has always been booked by progressive artists

@ Kahn - I guess I just got a really bad impression of PvD because I saw him play at Ultra in Miami a few years ago, and it was just terrible - but I'm sure that was partially just because it was Ultra, and Ultra is sorta inherently a cheese fest... I appreciate the fact that you have an open minded approach, and I agree that letting go of the "standards" (or at least the dogmatic adherence to them that some DJs/organizers have) would probably be a good thing
@ DH - first, your music is awesome, Clear Skies is one of the best albums I've heard in quite a while I think we have similar tastes, I've always though the guys behind Midimiliz/Spirallianz/The Delta make some of the most deeply psychedelic music, and I wish more people played stuff like that in "nighttime" sets.
My biggest issue with the whole day/night/twilight/morning/etc. system is that it limits what DJs can do within their own sets. Personally I like to have a narrative flow within my set, and so at different points in the set i'll play dark twisted stuff, uplifting positive stuff, weird funky stuff, primal meditative stuff, etc. I certainly understand the more macro approach to shaping a whole party to have a flow, but I can't help feeling like it sorta stifles the creativity of the individual DJs... and I also wonder what percentage of any given crowd really has the attention span to appreciate a 12+ hour flow structure. I can understand why some DJs would rather just play a certain style of music for an entire set (it's certainly easier in terms of harmonic coherence and transitions), but it's frustrating that the scene has developed a structure which sorta forces everyone to mix that way. |

+1 with insane
its really upto the feel of the music and thats where things get a bit confusing because its completely subjective
where one sees something completely evil and noisy i may see something fun and totally ripped
im sure standards do pop about at different places and it just reflects the taste of the people
as for the whole party organiser scene with melodic music in the morning, and edgier stuff earlier in the night - i guess its just up to the organiser, i mean after all he has put the whole shin dig together - and if for whatever reason you dont agree with it - then start up your own party , or come in around the time you get to hear what you like
cheers!

NIGHT = DARK INTELLIGENT PSYCHEDELIC DANCEFLOOR MUSIC...This is for taking the people into there dark side and experience fear, guilt, anxiousness etc...
Then comes...
SUNRISE = HARD PSYTRANCE FULLON...This is part has really aggressive melodies and intense psychedelic juicy sounds, massive morning stories which take the people on a voyage of light which after the dark side will feel even stronger, this is the point were the ego breaks up and we are left with nothing but the pureness of the pure! The best feeling of dreaming with your eyes wide open, this is the moment you really want to experience...
then comes the day...
DAY = Fullon / Progressive Psychedelic music...This part continues the journey, it's a smooth deep psychedelic sound, lots of deep beautiful delayed melodies and amazing soundscapes, which take the now ego less people and transform them into a marshmellow of love and purity. The beat is still strong so the people are enjoying an amazing moment of infinte dancing and energy...
After this party i think i would really need another one if it ever happens again
BOOM my dreams maybe one day they will come true! |

nice soul kontakt...
never thought about it thisway...
I like/produce more "happy" full on with lots of melodies and I always was wondering why they have to play the "creepy" sound on every party...
but as you said... when the "creepy" sound was over and they started to play the more "happy" sound - I was even more happy - and the good journey begann
now it makes totaly sense

Yeah I don't really like his new set style either. :/
It has become something like Trancey Euro Hard House... or something. It's not real trance like his stuff used to be; at least not to me.
But I recommend checking out some of his older stuff to see where he comes from:
Paul Van Dyk - 45RPM (1994)
Paul Van Dyk - Perspective (1997) (A Remix Album)
Paul Van Dyk - Out There And Back (2000)
Paul Van Dyk - Global (2003) <-His last great album... and a true work of art if you listen to it IN ORDER with gapless playback as originally intended. Oh and don't judge the album by the first track, it's just an intro to lift the spirits.
You can hear that originally, his most obvious inspiration is acid techno and acid music. It's definitely the beginning of "acid trance." His stuff has always been faster and used more ambiance than typical euro trance. But at some point around 2003, his style became very commercial; and you start to hear a lot less individuality in his music.
But occasionally you do hear some good stuff coming from this guy. In fact recently he helped create the 'Music Discovery Project' in Germany (you can youtube it), where he did a live performance of his tracks with a FULL classical orchestra; alongside percussionists and PVD at the synths. It's really amazing to me, and truly experimental.
Like I said, I'm not such a big fan of his new stuff. But his music will always be nostalgic for me as some of the first TRANCE that I listened to.

I believe that "Dark" is not really dark at all. It should be called "deep trance", or just alien music.

+1
but really when i think of it ive never been to an event with such a flow of music not only by live acts but dj sets too
i mean everyone want to listen the same all the time? that impossible (and happens all the time LOL ), it will get boring cause its like waving around the same and the same over and over again, like repeating the same thing
of course you need twisted stuff in the darkness and a revelatory sunrise and a path to follow, from complexity to simplicity, from dark to light, from hard to smoother feelings
therefore when speaking about 10 hours of music or festival times
same music all the time = no path
maybe a couple of hours experience on your favorite act and then ppl leaving-coming etc etc

more ppl than you think appreciate that flow imo, id say dont give a shit about 10-20 person who want dark or full on and play all the funky and twisted and positive stuff you got in you head, you cannot serve only digestives and beverages, bring tha f^$ng beef on the dancefloor
