I've heard the term tuning your kick quite a few times, but have always taken it to mean adjusting it by ear until it fits in nicely with the bassline. Is this all there is to it, or is there a deeper process involved?
How can you make your kick the same note as your bassline if the kick is basically a waveform that starts at a high frequency (something like 5 - 6khz I guess) and drops in frequency to around 40/50hz. Is it the frequency that corresponds to the note of your bassline that is correct to finish on?
Does anyone have any recommended techniques/plugins for doing this?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

From my limited experience you should not spend too much time on this issue.
Basically the kick and bass don't have to be set to the same note to fit together,
If it sounds good then it is ok even if the kick and bass are not on the same note.
If you still wish to go this way you can use something like this kind of plugin :
http://tuneit.free.fr/Site/Home.html
to check for the note of your kick drum,
Or just use a spectrum analyzer to see where the kick peaks and get the note from the analyzer (most analyzers show which note you are pointing to)
Most of the time transposing the kick would damage the kick sample so for me there are two preferable ways :
The first is finding the kick note and then changing the bassline note according to the kick,
The second is completely changing the kick sample according to the bassline note I wished to use.
But like I said... I think that in the end adjusting it by ear is the best way |

The fundamental of the bass should not overlap with the same frequency in the kick, if your bass fundamental sits around 55 hz and you have an A note as bass fundamental, I usually notch that frequency out of the kick, that is gently, some of that frequency is needed, so be careful, generally no more than 1 dB (usually less!) with a very narrow resonance setting... unless it really overlaps... and then it is better to take a different kick!
