Depends. If it's for dancing then usually start with low BPM then move to faster by halfway point then take it out slowly again. Also try to mix in key.

If it's ambient/experimental/drone/glitch/modern classical stuff usually I plan the story before hand & go for flow. It can be very long in planning, and I enjoy these sets much more. Actually I'm the only DJ this coming weekend at a small gig a friend is running outdoors. I'll be doing the Chillout tent for 8pm-10am Saturday to Sunday. Can't wait. A good friend of mine who's made documentaries over the last decade will be doing a mix of visuals from his work to be displayed on the 5 screens place around the tent as well. Lots of fun.           Cuntus Maximus.

If you mix in key, it's very difficult to get it wrong
