I said it 100 times b4 so once more wont hurt:
1. cubase
2. sound forge.
3. Fruity loops.

and the only machine u need is a good computer (p3 and upwards)

start writing.

if you want to learn using some program i suggest you to get the documentation for it,and read it BEFORE you begin using it. most of the programs have tutorials and they're very helpfull [surprise]

if u want to use software to create music try...
1) Software Synths/Emulators:
VAZ Modular,Reaktor,Rebirth,Reason,Tassman and other misc DirectX or VST softsynths [you'll need a host program for some of them].

for creating the offline audio parts - melodies etc.

2) Audio Editors:
Sonic Foundry's Soundforge 5.xx
Steinberg's Wavelab 3.0xx

for editing the above parts and mastering/CD production

3) Multi track sequencers:
Emagic's Logic Audio 4.7x
Steinberg's Cubase 5 VST32
Cakewalk Sonar
Sonic Syndicate's Orion Pro

for arranging and mixing the music in audio + midi

4) Many Plugins for the above -
Effects and Virtual instruments for VST or DX.

this is all software you'll need...
but ..... nothing of the above will make your music better except your HEAD !!!! so don't waste months on collecting all these proggies, just make some noise and experiment.

good luck
BOM

P.S. a keyboard controller will help you to work with all the programs, a good audio card will help you to get a better sound quality.
