taking your time != having a streamlined, efficient workflow.
By all means take your time and don't rush...but if you have an efficient workflow you can do good things quickly and get the ideas out of your head.
If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

agreed so much.
maybe another way to put it is simply - trust yourself! make music, finish tracks without too much second-guessing yourself.

still what set the time you will spend on tunes is mostly inspiration, you can make 3 minutes in 3 days that sound ok.. and then finish the 4 or 5 next minutes in one afternoon and this part may turn into the best of the tune by far. |

Bottom Line:
Just have fun with it
The BEST things ALWAYS come from TRUE PASSION.
Passion does not know the human invention of time.

lots of strong words here...thx a lot guys
something id like to ask tho...
how long do u guys usually take for a track.. ? i know this would depend person to person but jus wondering if there was an average...
Also, do u guys get all excited for the first 3-4 days of making a new sound, loop, etc., and by the time u actually finish the track u cant even stand it, coz u almost know the track and sounds by heart ???
this always happens to me...i make a sound or anything and for the first few days im always excited, but by the time the track is over im quite bored of my own music haha.... wonder if this happens to big artists...
ill make a new loop, sound, etc., and amuse myself on the sound for the next 3-4 daays and ponder on it, playing it over n over again, thinkin how to make the mix/sound better, should i add/delete, how to move forward, etc etc... but by the end of the 3 -4 days, im so bored of hearing it, i dont know how to move forward...lol

This is one of the best advices so far. Also, lowering the bpm made me laugh. Maybe that'll even work.
I know the feeling when you grow tired of your own songs, that's why you don't spend too much time on each part, overthinking everything. When you are happy with you have done, leave it. Continue from there but don't tweak the good parts over and over again. |

I have recently got into a different mindset, i don't care how long a track takes to make, even if it's 2 months of working hard everyday i believe that's how you learn in more depth and learn your gear/train your ears and discover new methods/techniques and of course those happy accident's come more frequent when your experimenting.
I wont usually move onto the next phase until i am really happy with it and it's what i want (whats in my head) and that way i feel more confident with the track even though i have heard it a million times and starting to get sick of it.
Also i always listen to other artists more intensely when making a track to get ideas and boost creativity and then make it my own - a pinch from here a pinch from there to get inspired because let's face it music is made from experiences and you want that translated to the listener as accurately as possible.
my .02 cents

imo you can make a basic kick/bass/1 synth track very fast,
but where is the point? there is nearly no listening experience...
for a more complex, imaginative track it will take time.
just make sure, to eliminate useless timewasters.
things what can help alot:
- shorcuts
- templates
- making you own presets
- skipping detailed mixing to the finish
- learning music theory, playing the piano
- learning your synth/daw inside out
- and my last investment was a daw controller (steinberg cc121)
cheers

Seems youre suffering from Loopitis also
Commonthing that is and I think everyone here at least had that problem...or still has.
You need to overcome this, I know that its nice to listen to something you created over and over because youre so facinated that you did build that yourself, but ...don't!
Try to listen to it not more than you really need, so it takes more time until you get bored of your own sounds....
develop strategies to keep the interest!
Example: Dont listen to it again until you put in something new or changed things.
Thats just one tactic, but one of the best I think

i think some here are missing the point.
when does a track start? when you open the "project file" first time and put the first sound there?
or.......
- months before, when you sampled that movie that you will now use the words from?
- two years before that, when you made the percussion battery pack you are going to use?
- when you spent time making patches for your synths?
- when you made a folder of drones and soundscapes?
maybe i am naive... if it is all samplepack music, then all this won't mean anything to you.
that is why take as long as you take, and just do it!
your music creation is a constant process, the one important thing is to finish songs.
if you want one advice then i think it would be don't work on many projects at the same time. work on a track, finish it and only then start a new one.
you will this way get used to following through and finishing your ideas without abandoning them half way.

Totally agree. Finishing tracks is very important - I know so many producers who complain that they have a billion half finished projects with good ideas.
Suck it up - push through, get it done Yesterday was a horrible day for me. 95% of everything I did yesterday was 'worthless' in that I didn't end up keeping any of the sounds that I made in the project I was working on, all the leads I made sucked, all the patterns I made were atrocious. I maybe made a couple useable presets.
However, today was/is a much more fruitful day. Percussion coming along, couple nice leads, etc.
2 cents.

yap. the person who pretty much is my guru and in my opinion makes the most amazing music i ever heard is a guy that makes electronic music for almost 15 years and has TONS, as in TOOOOOOOOOONS of unfinished tracks all over his 3 computers and he is just drowning in them never finishing anything and enver releasing anything.... such a shame really, he is mega talented and unique, but his workflow, or lack of one, kills his chances.
every time i make something cool i come to let him listen and then he plays what he is working on and i feel i am still light-years away from him. but people know me a little bit, and nothing about him, and the only reason is because i finish tracks
also one more thing i want to add -
there is an ebb and flow to life, and music making is a part of that. sometimes you are on fire, sometimes you can't make a tune to save your life. if you learn to recognize these patterns and not fall into absolute panic when the though times come, even learn to enjoy them and use the time to explore other aspects of life, then you will be making music for many years and not burn out. there is no need to make a track NOW, don't fall into this pressure of forcing yourself into muse all the time 24/7. i did that for some years and it almost got me to a point of not making music anymore.
