Hello all.

Using a lot of samples, I was feeling "creatively stuck", by browsing 1 or 2 library and sticking to it "style" due to laziness of lodaing a new one...

I decided to extract the content of all my samples libraries (quite some GB) and sort every sample in different categories & subcategories, with main ones like Loops, drum hits, pads and athmosphere, synth multisamples... trying to be as descriptive as possible, in each subcategories..

That's quite a hard job, i'm nicely done until now, but I get stuck with all my one shots FX samples...

damn there is so much, so differents, differents timbres, pitch, moods, noises etc...

It's very difficult to categorize these individual sounds, so many crosses beetween categories I try to figure.... glitchy, laser, rise sweeps, lo_fi, dub chord, noises, filter sweep, passby sound..... and so on... do you understand what I mean ?

Can you people help me with that ? what is your method of sorting samples ? Do you guys think I'm too maniac ?

Many Thanks for your answers.

and yes I know I should use synths and spend my time making music instead...

I've heard of something called Basehead Fx Database, that might just be a tool that could help. I have yet to use it, but it might just be something you might like.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

they usually even wont tell you how exactly they do it cause its kind of company secret how they manage those amount of samples and still be able to score and tone films fast enough for deadlines and challenge..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Well if you are looking for a database type thingie, perhaps the tool Mubali suggested may be worth a look; I always had the problem that I didn't want 2 or three times the samples just because I wanted them categorized two different ways..

I use junction (there is dlink (I think) for vista) to create a hard link in a different folder to the file. I have all the samples initially loaded by set and then as I browse I will link up samples where I think they ought to go. This way it doesn't take up more space, and I can still be creative -- I'm just not sure how a full copy would treat it; as the junctions or if it will try and follow the link.

At least I don't think you're crazy.

I use the Hollywood Edge Premier Edition and the 6000 series.

They're both sorted in descriptive folders (Doors, Squeaks And Creaks, City to Credit Card, Human Sounds etc) and include a PDF catalogue that has every sound plus audio details.)
