Hi have had a lot of problems setting the levels of my instruments right in the mix.
The reason i post here is to have some guidelines on how i easier can find the right levels for my instruments.
There is allways some sounds which are either to loud or quiet in my mixes.
What about mixing at really low levels, is that an good idea? |

Most people start from a level on their kick (say -10dbfs), then mix from there so things stay relative to that sound.
You should choose a range (say -8 to -6dbfs) that you want your sounds to be in, then tweak the mix to fit that range.

if you find sounds too loud or too quiet it might depend on the listening enviroment
I mean, which kind of monitors do you have?
I think it's the most important part of all equipment, maybe it's the only one we need coupled with a good soundcard
I woudn't mix very at very low levels, I woudnt mix at high volume either
at the low levels you hear high frequencies better than the low ones so you could be tempted to push the volume of the bass but at the right volume your bass could be just right
as the Fletcher Munson curves say

this is just from my experience

Start with the kick and bass and work your way from there. make a mix that sounds well to you. Then go to a different pair of speakers and different room. Check the sound. Too much low? not enough high? etc.
Do this in 2 or more rooms and adjust your mix to that info. After a while you learn to make a mix that sounds pretty decent everywhere.

It can be time saving if you start it up from the beginning.
Appart from that it is a matter of taste i'd say. Some people find it easy to work with other find it annoying.

the Fletcher–Munson curve was just a supporting theory of my practical experience.
How do we use it?
well, it says, for istance, that we are very sensitive to frequencies from 2000 to 5000hz maybe because the formants of the human voice lie in that range
so it means that it takes very little to hear frequencies from that range compared to others.
So to perceive bass as loud as a voice we need more pressure
that was just an example
hope it helps

I understand that there must be headroom in order for the track to sound good after the mastering stage....but what has really been bugging me is that all my instrument channels have been turned down from the vst's to avoid clipping, and my stereo out is still clipping.
Does this mean I should just turn the stereo out fader down or is it better to keep turning everything down the different instruments till there is no clipping on stereo track?
also whats up with rms and peak values...I didnt know that logic was showing me rms values on all channels...and now that I looked at the peak values is in the red big time...so my guess is to stay away from red peak values right? |

Just turn all levels down to avoid clipping in the master. The master is the sum of all individual levels.. so keep em low to avoid clipping.

what i usually follow is
the master at -5 to -6 dbs
kick around -10 db
and then start to mix all the sounds around these levels. It helps setting up a perfect mix

When it comes to levels in a mix, which instruments
has the highest levels and which are lower in volume.
When i listen to tracks made by ohers at low volume
it seems like the kick and snare are heard loudes and the other instruments are a bit lower is this true? |

Very simple .. Use your ears !
Theres some basic rules - Bass kik in the front (Lead the track) Then Hh loops and percussion in the second place and atmos there behind , But sure each one with his own touch (Look 'Prince' put his snare's in the front !) , Thats make all be sound much personal and unique . But this .. Do what you want .. Get wild and bring your story ..
