Well... Normally You would due a little bit EQing and maybe some not too severe Reverb. Some use compression too. Most people don't though.

Chorus, phaser etc. is rarely used for hats/snare unless for a short break or something like that.

Rolling hi hats I like to put 2 flangers on sometimes. 1 just short of a 1/4 note and 1 just short of an 1/8.

With percussion I like to do minimal EQ + comp though. I spend more time picking samples that work and then usually I hi pass them as much as I can without changing the character of the sound, then maybe a tiny bit of comp to sharpen the attack if needed.

I like to leave out too much overall compression because it kills the groove.

I pretty much always stereo widen the big off beat hi hats by panning identical samples hard left and right and then dragging the right one back a few ms until it sounds adequately huge, but not so much that the attacks become too seperated.

Great question, it realy seems like the high hats and cymbals are always the last to be talked about.
I have the most trouble working high hats, it is hard to find that right groove with them as to not sound mechanical or boring.
Those huge super long full on splash cymbals are always a lot of work for me to get to sound right also.
Lots of tweaking on eq, reverb, mabye a small delay for a slap back effect sometimes is nice.
I will use the Dr. Rex in reason rewired into Cubase with a breaks loop in it and tweak that into a high hat by messing with the freqencies and resolution pretty regularly also. Yup breaks sped up to 150 bpm with all low freqs cut out is psytrance high hats, almost.

If you're using samples, you can use a Transient Shaper to change the sound as well. I've been using this one: http://www.schaack-audio.com/transientshaper.html           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I think they are not much talked about because not much happens with them. They are often highpassed to cut the low rubbish, sometimes sidechained and a short reverb to make em sound they come from a similar room. And pan them. Et voila.. Ready. Oh and maybe some delay!

yes agree most of the work is to find the good sample or to make it.

honestly, i know a lot of people hipass their hihats, but some of my hihat samples need some eqing to bring down the really high tinny frequencies, and that helps sit them in the mix better for me.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

Equalize hats with ties and shoes XD ok. bad joke.

You know what is super cool? Group all of your percs (except for the open hat and snare (i like to treat those separately) and then insert an Izotope Ozone unit... go carefully tweaking stuff like exciter, dyamics, and specially stereo enhacement stuff that works great if you understand the multiband use of the program can really create depth and a 3d feeling on your percs. Ozone's reverb is not bad either...

try to modulate the volume of some hi hats so it doesnt have that machine sound. It makes it more dynamic. I add a little reverb as a send. and eq ( insert)

Or better layer another hat line with a 3-6 differents hats each on 16ths, lower volume so it blends with other channel... instant humanization... velocity/level is also very important tho. Make it shikishaka

Equing hi-hats is really a mild job. Most of the times you would hi-pass and maybe increase-decrease a high freq area with a low Q factor.
Compressing the hi-hat channel would kind of ruin the whole rythmic idea you might want to build using velocity/amplitude changes, unless you're using high attack compression. Hihats' main roll - to contribute to the rythm, rather than just adding a new sound.

I would say that panning, reverb/delay and maybe high attack compression would be the most used in order to decide mix placement.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
