Bilbo, it is possible to play Live only with a PC.

of course it will have to be heavily loaded with ram and run by good processors but techinacally it's possible and has been done quite a lot.

The true meaning of a live Trance act is when the artists play their music with live midi,
meaning that all the parts and lines are played live from the sequencer to the keyboards, and then turning the knobs won't be fakes as most people do(most artists just hook up a synth and play randomly with sounds so then the knob movement can be real).
i know that POWER SOURCE made a true live act like that once.however,
This MIDI setup almost never happens as no one does this,
it's too much of a headache.

enter the world of AUDIO-
artists that have their tracks completely in audio format can make a live session on the sequencer with all the tracks ,not just in Waveform(like a lot of people do) but with all the channels and parts open to manipulation.

This is what we usually do(of course only if we recieve the computer power we demand)plus playing samples from the Logic sampler, adding some sounds here and there from the synths and also drumming live on an electronic drum pad.

so people who make their music only with Audio should have no problems making a LIVE set with their pc(and a controler keyboard).

but make no mistake,90% of live acts are pretty "dead"........

i don't want to name names, but some really big acts don't even plug the synths to the electricity

But you can hear a good live act every now and then, and there's nothing like hearing someone play around with his tracks in the exact way the audience needs... And it's much easier playing with knobs than with a mouse, and A LOT easier to play live off a midi keyboard, much faster and instinctive.

I don't count acts who don't improvise while they're going as a live act though, because coming with all of your loops prepared and only playing with cutoffs as improv is much more mechanical.

... in short, a bit of extra emotion is so much easier to do with a keyboard.

1st i would like to say i never seen BLT playing live only form cds
2nd if u use audio than its not ur CPU that will chock its ur HD that will choke and fast and the nowadays music?
everything is samples of a samples of a samples the only time we played live we used mostly the keyboards with prepared arpegious and FX and just synced it ,2 comps,2 keyboards,2 ppl.
but hey we used Impulse tracker as our  sequencer:)) actually for live its pretty good besides the quality and options and anythng that a sequencer have:))

trancebull i second that impulse idia eheh..
but i do beliave you can make a true live act with your mother program running , and mostly with midi playing cuz , when you have it all on audio and you play midi notes and write midi notes .. that's like doesnt touchs your cpu etc..
just that you need the computer and a fast hd , phat soundcard etc...
:)

p.s. ; x-dream live !! :) the real thing ..

from my experiences with computer the way to go is like this:

1) make a LIVE mix tracks where u can drag your waves of various tracks (tracks with zillions of layers that will probably crash your PC) then once u have a LIVE mix track u can add a midi or an effect here and there...this eases pc memory and allows u to make different versions live hehhehe

2) another way is to make fewer layers one layer for drums others for kick and bass and other for leads (notice this sucks more memory) Vibra man is using this technique where he may be able to add a plug in to the drum layer and the kick and bass is unaltered or you can record and save memory. The advantage is that u can route kick or bass to a channel and have other channels free...

3) conclusion THERE R TONS OF WAYS TO MAKE LIVE : )

as long as computer power is there

about the question, I don't understand why live can you do without a synth? moving  mouse? or... hitting the PC keyboard ?
it's a silly idea - the whole point in live is tweaking a knob and playing the synth! imho :)

best opinion i heard about this subject after years of discussion... (of course this is my opinion too 8) )
