Hello

This is a sound from a track made by FREq. I can hear that he is using both reverb and delay, but it sound like it's sliced or something?

Thanks

it's simple: use your favourite synth patch, then put a delay on its output. play some sequence of notes you like and automate the delay to be only turned on one (or on certain) notes.

in your example: the first notes are short and getting a bit longer, and they are dry. then one note has a delay on it with a good amount of feedback and automated filtering (notice the dalay losing a little bit of the lower freqs as it goes..), then the other notes are again dry.

have fun!

how do you do that?telling the delay to play only on the hard velocity notes or something like that?

its done manually, turning delay fx send on for certain selected notes.

Hmm... I can't make that sound ... does the delay have to be as a send effect ?

nope, put it as a insert effect.
Then do an automation on the wet/dry level.

What application do u work on? (i.e. cubase, logic, acid, ableton line etc etc)

you can use both a send or insert effect. both give you the same results, but when using a send effect, you can share the plugin with other audio tracks and save on cpu workload.

for a send effect you can automate either the send level or send on/off.

for an insert effect you can automate the wet/dry level as mentioned by koalakube, or the insert on/off.

ok thanks ! Now I know the difference between a send effect and insert.

I use Cubase.

What does wet/dry mean ?

Sorry mate but an insert effect and a send effect are not the same.

The main difference beetwen the 2 :

with a send effect you will have to mix your signal between unprocessed and processed

with insert the whole signal runs thru the effect, choosing it being either pre or post-fader.

(with pre the effect signal goes with volume fader, while with post youŽll hear your effect-tail,even tho volume is 0)

Now that we all clear on this, the easiest way to achieve an effect where only some notes have a delay is to put the delay as insert then do an automation for the wet/dry parameter.

PhMAgic,if you open almost any vst plugins from your sequencer, you will then have to find a controller called wet/dry.That just set the amount % of effect to be applied to the source (the track).Being it 100% wet it means that all the source go truh the effect while 100% dry it means that what you hjear is the source unaffected by the effect.

Normally you are given the choice to automate any parameter of a plugins/vsti.

yep you could do that.

as a general rule id just pay attention not to use too many send effects, hence the overall levels (volumes) can get a bit out of control when you have to do the mixdown.

also i personally wouldnt run multiple instruments truh the same send effect, especially if the their freqs are very different .

I thought the point of a send effect was that multiple instruments COULD use it and therefore saving on multiple instances of Heavy workload Inserts such as Reverb and Chorus... Good to use with Light reverb sends for percussion... Thats what I thought...
