I saw someone playing one in the street when I was in Amsterdam last week.
I just looked up the wiki entry.. I can't believe the instrument is only 8 years old. I thought is was just a classic steel drum.
Damn.. now I want one to add to my collection of strange instruments.
"In 2006 the Hang Makers stopped shipping instruments directly and halted sales through retailers. To obtain a Hang, prospective customers must now send a letter to request an instrument."
double damn..

i think something like that could be recreated layering two sounds, first one - something like bell with reversed(?) reverb, the second is something like african drum sample, dont know...

I was trying to make something like it with the 404. Because it has the smeary strechy kind sound..but not the metalic pang. I am certain sytrus could make something very close..but sytrus lags my putur
It sounds really nice..it has its own delay which is neat, but yeah, the end result may involve a sample and a synth layered.
I want to see what you guys can come up with...i'll try to make it myself also..as i want it in a song i am working on.
i'll look into something similar to what you described Medea...considering i already have metalic percussion samples. Getting tone will be difficult.

filter keytracking could help get the clangy and the smooth both in one patch.. another possibility is to have your clangy patch sent to some filters followed by a delay.
as for the smearing.. its just them pushing down on the metal to create a pitchbend so... pitchbend lightly.

SONICCOUTURE HANG DRUM IS I BELIEVE WHAT YOU NEED... CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG HEHE BUT OTHERWISE GOODLUCK, I GOT IT AND IT HAS PLENTY OF CONTROL OVERALL LIKE KEYSWITCHES, IN OTHER WORDS U HAVE A SET OF KEYS TO MODIFY THE SAMPLES AND SOME TO PLAY THE LINES, YOU'LL HAVE IT SOUND LIKE A THUMB HIT IT OR A FINGER, PERHAPS SOFT AND HIGH VELOCITY OR IN VIOLIN STACCATO, PIEZZO, ETC... GIVING UR SOUND MORE VARIATION MAKING IT SOUND ORGANIC, NOT GUN TYPE EFFECT... ADDS REALISM. PEACE

exactly what it sounds like. it tracks the midi notes being played and modulates a feature accordingly.. like filter cutoff.
