hmm there isnt much secret but practice... FM s bout gettin one synth and know the correct configurations to get a good fm sound..at least in the vsts ....so there isnt realy a proper setting...
somewhere around here isratrance, we had a topic where some people were chatin bout FM synths and they conclude those HARD harsh FM sounds are a little hard to get out from VSTs...tho u still can do with proper settings ...
i like to work with FM in DISCODSP and lately i ve been tryin to work in SYNTH 1 aswell... coz some people around here said synth1 s good to get fm sounds...
and well to get this sound out from synth 1 i d try firstly startin a init preset and then turning the mix all the way to the oscilator 1.... then i d choose a triangle wave in this oscilator coz i like the sound of the triangle... and then in the second oscilator to FM the first oscilator i d choose a square or sawtooth... prob a saw to the sound get more harsh but sometimes the square will make it sound stronger...
then i d start to turn the FM BUTTON slowly the way up till i find the most closed possible sound from this one u are lookin...
then if needed i d turn 1 octave up the second oscilator... to check if it get cooler or not... or even move 1 octave up or down from both oscilators together who knows.... trials and errors.. ( and considerin the midi notes are in the octaves around the 500 hz.... prob beetween c3) tho this sound s more to the highers than to the lows...so prob the oscilator 2 one octave higher would get closer...
and then i d work in the filter envelope, its kind of doin a woooooooooooooo... so i d make the filter envelope move the cutoff from low to the high...
well im far from bein the best sound designer but well u could try that way..thats how i d try anyway...
and u ll prob need equalizer on it to clean the low frequencies that will show up because of the FM and also to make some harmonics stronger coz as said before..the VSTS are kind weak for those FM sounds..
if i forward wrong info someone will show up to correct us
