not sure how to describe this best. I hear it in a lot of the productions I consider my favorites.. from dubstep to night psy to techno.

i can also hear it on any type of sounds.. from leads to drums to the overall track.

I think it may be intense use of compression and reverb but I thought someone might want to discuss.

its just when something gets really tight and "pops". I hear it alot in Electrypnose later works

If you give sounds a really small room reverb it often sounds plastic. Set decay to something like 0.1 or 0.2 and wet pretty high, but lower than the dry signal.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Bandpass filter gives a plasticky sound with a synth patch.

i would say, choose the right sounds, i.e. raw sine wave based sounds and such, then play with cutoff and resonance to make synths sound plastic. set medium resonance, increase cutoff from muddy over plastic to screaming. stop at plastic ;-)

besides that, the right compressor can make your whole mix sound in a nice and plastic way dynamic. cubases 5 multiband comp for example gives an plastic sound (in this case thin, plastic and shiny)

powercore character is an "instant plastic" plugin as well.

and i agree, highpass as well as bandpass filters can add to that sound as well..

many ways to plastic city

^^^lol maybe?

hard to explain.. and I listen to WAY too much music to think of a specific moment.. will for sure link when I come across something...

but try to think about latex.. like those sexy chicks wearing tight latex zip up outfits..

like if you rubbed something against that and it had that kind of squeech to it..

I don't know? but so far I think the cubase compressor might be alot of what I'm talking about.. I know electrypnose is using cubase..

I just don't have it, so...?

not the c5 compressor it s easy to replace ,nothing special imo but i haven t used them much.
some processors give you that instant satisfaction, you insert it and wow it just sound like a record maybe it s what you mean with plastic sound? try to compress the master a little, try the glue vst demo or the free Density mkII compressor and see if it s what your looking for.

i did not say it is something special. it just gives a plastic touch, i do not think it is a particularly good compressor.
on the other hand, a very good comp mostly does not give that plastic vibe but rather a soft and glued touch imho

put its all about what you believe to be a "plastic sound" anyways.. hard to decide for somebody else
