Hi I would like to learn how to make this
wicked instrument you can hear in some shpongle songs,The instrument sounds like an combination of a flute and a vocal which changes in pitch i believe.
Please help me to make one

im guessing youd use a vocoder with the flute as the carrier
Work like you don't need the money.

add distortion and vocoder and play with all the settings,
also use a slicer or cut manually 1/16th or 1/32th parts of the audio wave,
good luck, |

Matrix, how do you mean with a slicer ?
you mean i should slice uip the instrument after it is finished ?

and one more tip, when you cut the wave to 1/16th's, 1/32th's parts- if you are not cutting them precisely do a small fade out on each cutted part(only for those there's silence after them)this will remove the clicks-

although one can never be sure about what exactly you are talking about unless one hears it, i believe the sound you want to reproduce is not made with some sort of effect or vocoder.
like i already said in another thread (concerning raja ram's flute), there is a specific way of playing the transverse flute where one can make noise with his mouth, while blowing the hole of the flute. with practice, one can sing the notes he is also playing with the flute. i believe Ian Anderson was the first one to introduce this style of playing the flute where you can listen in most of Jethro Tull's songs.
i am not saying that it can't be done with a vocoder or smth (after all i said i am not sure about which sound exactly you want to reproduce), just pointing out a different way of thinking

Conny i think Oli Larkins BeatMorpher is what u need.

Plugin Description:
Beat morpher is a sample playback drum machine with a difference. You specify start and end positions for each drum hit. Then you can morph between the two patterns using a slider or by just pressing the auto-morph button. The beat will gradually morph over a specified number of bars. This effect was inpsired by the music of Simon Posford aka Hallucinogen and Shpongle (with raja ram).

Never heard that track but I've just listened to the mp3 sample at shpongle.com where you hear the sound.
First of all: Cool sound!
I think its a sampled female vocal just sining a constant, but slightly evolvnig, "aaoohhhhhhhhh" tone perhaps mixed with a flute like waveform. The flute like tone could also just be way the pitch is controlled or the "hiss" that the voice has. (sounds kinda like some of Enya's layer vocals - they also has this dry sparkling highend). It could also be his Eventide fx unit. I know that these have some wild pitch shifting algorithms. Bahh could be so many things
The stuttering effect with the same sound later on in the track is not done by cutting the sequence in 16th or whatever and deleting pieces. I know he uses his drawmer gate for this fx alot (read this in an interview). Using a gate (that has a sidechain input) is a far better way, and easier way to do this because it is non destructive. So you trigger the gate with a midi sequence that playes a simple synth sound (just white noise will do) that goes into the gate's sidechain input. The sequence that has to have the gap's (in this case the female flute vox sound) is send through the gates regular inputs. So everytime the gate recives a signal in the sindechain it opens and you hear the flute vox lead.
