Layering kicks has never worked in my songs.Unless your putting a pitched 808 style kick to underpin a bassline or something like. I think your best with one good kick from a good commercial sample cd. I keep going back to the mutekki/vengeance ones. I use them for psy trance/house and dubstep projects. If you want really punchy kicks look at hard house/hardstyle sample cds. Vengeance clubs sounds vol 1 is my goto for kicks and claps |

a good 808 kick is what you are after... than just pitch to fit and eq.
compressor doesnt make fat kicks if the source is bad, compressor will even more make a kick thinner if the source is bad and the user dont know how to use a compressor.
i hate that many think that compression will produce purple unicorns and rainbows wherever its stick to...
its all in the source, tunning properly and eq in my book.. compression is for enhancing attack/transients and leveling volume fluctuations http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

agree plugins compression on their own rarely make things phat, louder yes but phat not really often it s thiner imo ,you re reducing dynamics , what make some hardware adding some depth are tubes transformers opamp maybe ...saturation,you can mimic it with plugs though for front to back depth, weight, i haven t heard a plug really convincing yet (should try nebula ).

I dont like the idea of layering kicks. Just means more work making sure they're in key and their pitches work well together.
Rather just be very selective about the sample you use in the first place, really careful EQ. If it really does need to be layered, rather clone it and change the second one instead of using a different kick.
