1. drop a metal ball on a metal table
2. the same
3. do same with two balls
Seriously though, automating a delay wont cut it. Usually this means that pitch bend or sudden clicks are introduced. I might be wrong here too. But it might be hard to get the automation just right.
Anyway, basically this is just like dropping a ball. When it bounces, a certain amount of the energy is
wasted on the collision, and the ball doesn't bounce that high next time. The delay time and the sound amplitude are relative to the energy.
So if you have something like 90% of the energy preserved, the delay lengths will be 0.9, 0.9*0.9 = 0.9^2, 0.9^3... and so on.
For second this would be 1 sec, 0.9 sec, 0.81 sec, 0.729 sec...
With 50% preserve it would be 1 sec, 0.5 sec, 0.25 sec, 0125 sec... and amplitude would change like 0dB, -3db, -6db, -9db and so on. (50% amp = -3dB)
These are no strict rules, but will get you started. Try replacing the initial delay time with 1 beat and the energy preserve with something like 3/4 =75%... and voila: a ball bouncing on a beat
If you don't want to place the samples by hand, some modular with sample player could be used (i'd go for reaktor). Accelerating lfo triggering a sample player maybe?
just my 0.02 cent... |

Synth with a VERY short delay time and feedback sequenced with MIDI then panned.
Velocity tapers off to the end with a sharp rise right at the end. |

Hey everyone, my first post here.....
This effect is easy to do.....as Colin said, automating the end point of a sample loop...
You can do this with Native Instruments Battery (automatable start, end and loop points) and Ableton Live if you use the "simpler" instrument.
Anyway, hello!

Have a listen to the beginning of "Infected Mushroom - Roll Us A Giant" for an awesome example of this effect. |
