in lot of case the shaping on a kick with a compressor can be done the same with proper amplitude envelops setting . compressors can add some color , harmonics/ eq curve but if you dont look for that there is no need for compression if what you are after is just adding a short decay time |

Now we get the sound, a really nice kick, how do you process the kick? I use eq, compression, but I really think they lack a little sub, I try to use more eq, but im pretty sure there most be a nice plug, that specializes in processing kicks, that would be nice, if some one knows about any good plug please share

Try Pultec Eq for low end, also something like Waves API 560/SPL Rangers for dipping, my little secret is Nebula library from CDSoundMaster called Tape Booster+, it's just "it".

api 2500 compressor works great on some kicks when you want to emphasize the attack portion of it. it adds some coloration to the sound, but a good one! that's pretty much all I use it for.
I usually synthesize my own Kicks. lately been using Zebra 2 a lot, which I guess not many people are using for such porpuses, uh? but the MSEG envelopes are really all the flexibility I need and I usually layer (on the same patch) a bit of noise to. also like ultrabeat a lot, also has very flexible envelopes and produces a very powerful sound with tones of atitude.
tried POM's kick ensemble recently and it's also dope, has a very raw sound to it and the controls are just spot on (pretty much the same under the hood thinking I usually do on Zebra). Pcylocybian's rack is also cool, specially if it inspires people to combine their own layers in a similar way - no better way to design your own drums, and it's also fun once you get the hang of it, nothing like having your own personalized kit/kits (and Maschine of course XD).
another one that rarely gets mentioned is Diversion, also with very tight and flexible multi-stage-envelopes (plus a ton of other stuff), very good synthesizer in general with a lot of depth and did I mention the fx's parameters are all selectable destinations for modulation just like on a Virus? (has the random source to!)... time will tell, but this one was born to become a psychedelic bread and butter synth, I think.
while I'm at it, can't say this enough, do yourself a favour and get Bazzile's beta (from u-he) if you fancy the self-oscillating resonance kind of kick (and super tasty filters and... and...).

Cool man, I didn't know about the Diversion vst, It looks really complex and fun! I have to get it I'm also gonna try that api 2500, they are really powerful compressors really cool plugs.
And you are the first person to mention using zebra for kicks, I would look in to that, zebra is one the best vsts in the market! thanks for sharing! |

most synth can make good kicks but on some it s way easier ,diversion is really good indeed, zebra too with the self oscillating filter so you get more range for the modulation than when using a sine osc.
massive great too.. but synth are tricky to fine tune imo , it can take lot of time tweaking the envelops getting the low mids low punch right , the highs ect..i use a lot voxengo span for this carffuly set up but with monitoring you can trust it s not needed.
you need good meat in the low octaves imo even low mids depending kick after.. and this come from the pitch modulation between 100 200 or even 300 HZ to the low end |
