it s easy to remove all the benefits of a analog chain by just inserting a digital saturation plugin but whatever sound good...

I like to send all of my percussion to a bus and add some reverb, a little bit of distortion, and compression. Pan your hats as well to really widen your sound

mayb coz all your sounds are placed "centered" they are over layering your kick.... so in order to avoid that pan them so u have the kick and the bass playing "centre" and the rest running around left and right...

ofcourse proper eq is also the key to getting the sounds fitting tightly together.

avoid grouping all the percussion into one channel and adding Fx coz remember every sound will need a different eq !!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Elastic_Plastic would i leave the main hihat center? How do people pan the other hats? When certain hats are panned one way it sounds odd, can anyone give me an example of effective panning of percussion?           The dancing ones were thought to be mad, by the ones that couldent hear the music

have your snare placed centre along with kick and bass - side chain it with your kick. make sure you place your snares a few ms b4 the kick to avoid it from peaking.

clone 2 channels for open high hats - pan one left 50% and the other 50% so in this way you have them playing at the sides and you have enough space at the centre for clear kick, bass and snare sound.

for closed high hats - again close 2 channels and pan one hard left 100% and the other one pan right hard 100%.

otherwise you can also automate panning - which is what i like to do usually the sound seems to run around for left to right, front to back along with a bit of reverb and mayb some delay (depends what sounds your really looking for).

The standard panning setup in drum recordings is:

Kick - Centre
Snare Centre
Hats - Half right/right
Cymbals - left - right
Toms - left - centre - right.

Send each sample to diff fx channel as you will need diff. eq settings for each sample and mayb u like some diff fx on each sample.Proper Eq is the key here as well.

Ps: if your are Fl studio 8 i will send you a project file where you can have a look at exactly how it works.

cheers!!

Personally i would do this, stick a gate on it to get a nice clean/sharp/quick release then eq it till its the sound you want. Then i would stick on a compressor with a high attack ... simples, I know this is a generalisation but it was quite a general question as we don't have the sample or your mix to suggest things that would be more relevant or bespoke.

When layering hats, post delay one of the hat tracks 2 ms !
Other than that, transient shaper should help...

I think somebody will kill me for this, but i had recently a good result by using the Cubase envelope shaper, increasing attack           http://soundcloud.com/catweazle-psytrance-music

Choosing good loops with "bite" is the best way to get percussion with "bite".
If you are using Logic 7/8/9, there's thousands of them in the apple loops library. then mix them in right. ennit.
