To make your Kick softer. You could use eq. Try using the spectrum annalizer. That helps me. Maybe is picking. And to give a good a punch I do use compression, may be try other compressor. Or play more with the ratio. remmeber to take really low frequencies away with your eq. I cound be wrong cuz Im starting too. but I think from 30hrtz down the human ear cannot hear those frequencies so It just makes your mix dirty. If Im wrong please correct me.

cut frequencies from 30-50or60 to get rid of the frequencies that will make subwoofers jump like crazy.

You can try to cut some higher frequencies in your kick and turn up the volume. It will be 'softer' then in a way.

You can have the kick fade out each time it hits so it doesn't interfere with the bassline as well.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

some times i found nice to cut kick about 50-55Hz generaly cut all below 40Hz and use spectrum analyzer to find some harmonics and try cuting them with high q. On compressor look how fast reduction going back to 0 it need to be in thet position betwine two kicks.

Or you can just put your kick in bucket of hot wather for few hours and make it softer           Never let computers to win a game! :)

parallel compression might help,
duplicate the kicks track, leave the first untouched and compress the shit out of the second

Try compressing the very snap of the kick. Stillwell Rocket has extremely fast attack and release possibilities... very nice for fine tuning the attack of a kick.           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

i really dont get the all cut thing in kicks in the lower than 50hz
u dont want bass on your kicks???

personaly we never cut the kick and usually we have an increase in the 55-60hz of 1-2db to get more low ( not neccesary ) than cut the excess boxiness around 450-600hz and maybe some small dips in 1000-1400khz to get rid of the harsh and hard woodines!
than some gentle compression ( not oversquashing ) than fit nicely with the bass and than compress both in a group gently again to glue them together more!

at least this is my way for a punchy but smooth/soft kick.

but always depend on the kick sample!

what do you mean with softer? your kicks have too much attack? when i want them softer i remove the attack with a fade or remove the high with peak or shelf filter or you could try multiband compression (maybe used more like a eq)

you could try a boost around 5 db or even more where it sound good in the low around 50/80 hz and one other boost around 2500/3500 hz maybe and then adjust the ouput of the eq so it s a the same level than when not equed to a/b and adjust the q and freq with the bassline, it make soft kick but find them too soft for fullon

i think i know what he means, and softer is not less punchy. I think you want to make it ``less sharp``. I think you have to cut higher frequencies           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``
