My method does not use any distortion. It simply synthesizes a kick using a square oscillator instead of a traditional sine. Try just that (I did  ) and you'll see that it's pretty close. The filter stuff is to make it even closer to the sound in your clip (deeper trilling in the beginning and superficial crackling in the end).

Maybe. I don't want to argue about distortion here anyway: you know more about it, but I don't need it to recreate the sound you want.
Just forget about all the theory and try what I did: open a kick preset in Analog or Operator and change the oscillator from sine to square - you'll be about 3/4 of the way towords your goal before even applying any filters or effects (you may have to shift the oscillator an octave lower though).
Takes half a minute to try (and I know you use Ableton  ) |
