my production improved with speakers very noticebly but I read often thru user Speakafreaka comments that he is not using any good monitors even that he is using only headphones ..(somewhere on psymusic I think though) and I think his quality is amazing.
I believe with expirience and the right use of analyzers it can work too.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

your room will color a lot the sound anyway , your +2/-2 monitors can turn up in +10 / -10 db easily .
it s more about finding monitors that work for you,in your room , it can be 200 or 2000 dollar monitors. a very detailed monitor don mean it s better for mixing ,a good monitor is one that give you good mix with the less effort .

@ PoM - I agree . - Also I notice it now,it is my next issue to improve.. cause my walls are so high and the room is a bit hally.Still it is much more dynamic, clear and punchy than my experiments with really bad speakers.
I'm almost satisfied I think now that are only tiny problems though, now all makes fun, espescially clearing anything with eq.
And the result that were coming only from times where I used only headphones were frustrating.
Now room treatment will be my next plan.
@ Sound Geezer - I don't know that.

One mans bad is another mans good....Headphones can help in areas where poor monitoring can let you down. This includes the room you put the speakers in. I also use headphones to check for noise issues, clicks etc. It is like a safe guard as my room is not isolated. My headphones cost just shy of 200 UK pounds. Don't be surprised if the chap you mentioned has spent a similar amount. I would never work on JUST headphones. Again I would stick my neck out and say the same for this other chap.

yes I agree ,same expirience there are things where I put my headphone on.But the overall mix and most of the time I prefere now monitors.
Although without headphones it would lack of a lot to improve too.
And I have only the very cheep bayerdynamic dtx 700 and a few even more cheeper.
I'd like to buy sth better but the money is not endless here.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Geezer - as far as I know, Speakafreaka uses his hifi speakers like you use your cans, ie. just to check stuff. I'm pretty sure he only uses cans to produce, but has said it took him a long time to get used to it and agrees it might not be best for everyone. Anway I'm sure he will give his own account here if he sees this thread.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

lol....Abbey road use HIFI speakers. So do many Mastering suites. My point was that it is highly unlikely that he uses just headphones and that they may be quite expensive.

He uses HD25s and owns no monitors as such (still, to my knowledge).

Abbey Road do not use 'HiFi' as we would understand it; more a mix of audiophile speakers out of the price range of most of us, and large monitors.

Dude they do use HIFI speakers. B&W, they make HIFI speakers. High-Fidelity. They don't just use the big ones. They actually use some of their bookshelf speakers for nearfield.

Have you checked the current retail price of the HD25's? Not exactly cheap. A 4 year old post....PMSL

IF you got out of bed the wrong side go get back in it.

"and yes I do check on hifis and often alter the mix in particular as a result" speakafreaka

So like I said he does use more than just headphones.

Colin are you arguing for the use of only headphones?

Whilst B+W do also make hifi speakers, the B+W 800Ds mentioned repeatedly on their website cost around $12,000 a pair. That's not HiFi. Which B+D bookshelfs do they use there, and in which studios? You seem to have a more intimate knowledge of their facilities than is given on the website.

As for getting up on the wrong side of the bed, it was you who suggested that everyone on this thread was ignoring the influence on the room. It's not like people never talk about that stuff, it just wasn't the subject of this thread.

Anyway, whatever, you're right if you want to be           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

SO B&W don't make HIFI speakers? They say they do

Hah you could have said! What work did you do, can we hear it?

What would you class as 'audiophile', then, out of interest? Those speakers - the top of B+W's range - are marketed as 'the best speakers in the world', which would certainly take them out of the HiFi box for me.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
