im having problems to make good drums (hit hats and snares)...
i dont wanna use loops.. and i dont found good preset on my vst´s (i try a lot of his... Stylus, lm-7, kontak, battery...) maybe the problem is my mastering...
my idea is create psychedelic tracks with fast basslines (16) and uplifiting drums...
help is welcome!!!
(where i can post a demo of my track to explain better my question??) |

presets for battery?
i think you misunderstand the point of battery
its a sampler, not a synth. so the 'presets' you get with it are just example drum kits... but out of about 20, there are only 3 that are even slightly relevant to psytrance (taken as they are): "trance", and "dance 1" and "dance 2"
and even "trance" is much more like crappy club trance.
you need to create your own kit. many of the samples that come with these preset kits are excellent, mix and match between all the kits. like take a snare from the drumnbass kit, a hi hat from the electro kit, etc. and then most importantly, seek out every drum hit you can find. build a vast library of drum hits. and then just assemble custom kits from this library.
if you do this you dont really need anything else for drums... battery alone is awesome ... but expecting to just load a preset kit and have a perfect 2004-style psytrance kit....? thats just not going to happen

snares and hats are the most easy to find on the net. i think if u want your snares to sound more electronic and trancy then try to alter them with EQ of filters. try to cut some frequencies of the snare. play around with plugs until you`ll find the sound you like.
if you like something - export it as one hit. start to make your own sounds.

actualy good source samples r the key here (clean and pro recorded)
but u can fit any drum sample into the track
use EQ and compressors on kicks
EQ and noise gates on hihats and snares
try to work with some friquensy analyser to understand how to EQ leaving only small ranges open
clean whatever u dont like
boom

The thing with most of the trance stuff that sells a lot, is that they use pretty thin snares and drums in general.

Which is a pity actually... most of the time it sounds like an empty tin can to me.. I really would love to hear more powerfull percussion grooves a-la Chemical Brothers or Underworld in trance productions

If you are using Battery one of the most important things to get realistic drum sounds, especially on snares, is velocity layering.
Your battery manual should explain it in detail, it is actually quite simple and will give you a much better drum sound. |
