Can any of you psytrance producers give some tips on how you come up with those ridiculous twisted mind-bending sounds? is there some book on sound synthesis that i should read? certain vst's i should have?
thanks in advance for any tips

Nothing like twisting real knobs and recording bro, get a midi controller or if you can afford it a hardware synth.
Cheap solution is automate vsts, lots of modulation, fx and such...
Sample CDs work well too if you don't have lots of time to craft fx.
Also recording.
But most important advice is to have the sound in your mind or at least an approximated idea to start with.

awesome, thanks for the advice guys. i'm trying to stay away from samples cd's for this sort of thing, because i like to have a bit more liberty with the sound.
I actually do have a hardware synth; I have an e-mu proteus 2000, but i feel that I don't do enough with it and only stray a short distance away from the original presets...also i don't know anything about getting it to sync up with my computer's midi clock. Are there any particular hardware synths under $500 that you would recommend, aciduss?

For really twisted sound fx lately I've been making complex 'microedit' sound collages, basically taking snippets of found sound and stacking them up together in interesting ways. Reverse bits. Filter. Add other fx. Then resample, reverse again, play with delays and other effects, loads of automation.
So yeah, in short, 'real' sounds, but edited in very interesting ways. |

if you've got $500 to burn, do yourself a favor and get Spectrasonics Omnisphere. the new version has 8,000 sounds. and like 5k patches. in addition to having a ridiculously awesome synth in it.
Out of all the synths that I've used, it is the one that consistently gives me the '....shit that is a really crazy sound how the fuck?!' experience the most
also for FX alone I highly reccomend Uhbik FX pack by U-He. Really psychedelic sounding to my ears
in terms of synthesis, try to work outside your normal box for modulation options - and definitely get a synth that has a nice modulation matrix or way to tie anything to everything, or at least a good portion. Pick a parameter that you're not familiar with and modulate it with or use it as a modulation source for a bunch of shit, see what happens
If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Get Absynth. You can do crazy FX with any synth, but there are some synths which can provide more experimental sound... Absynth and also FM8 are two of my favourites. Or get a reall hardware modular synth, nothing too big. With basic Doepfer modular setup you can do really crazy sounds...
But I think the easiest and most effective solution would be Absynth. You dont need hardware for that. Absynth has crazy sound possibilities (FM, Granular, Morph, Editable waveforms, sampler) it has really different internal effects which are very good for experimental sound. You can morph even LFO waveforms. But the best thing in Absynth are envelopes. You want to twist sound in a complex rhythmic manner, you can control all the aspects of it, even make editable LFOs out of them. And no this is not a commercial, but Absynth really is superior for FX toward other synths Ive tried.
Most people use Absynth just for pads and ambiences which is a big mistake. I use it for everything, mostly for twisted FX, bass (works amazing) and leads |

Oh yeah, try spending one day working with absynth, try every single button and wave editor that it has, you're gonna realize you can do crazy shit with it, trust me.

Yeah of course you don't need hardware, i just mentioned the knob thing because it is pretty simple to come with ideas that way but it is more about understanding how to make what you want.
Fx are cool, but don't apply them blindly, understand each parameter and make them work for you.
Play with pitch shift, and almost any time based fx in which you can play with a rate / speed knob, also play with filters. Rendering stuff and applying more wise effecting can be good too.
Absynth is good but i find it a little complex for when you want to create fast stuff. For sweeps, stabs, spiraling shit and squelches you can't go wrong using something like discovery / nordlead.
For more complex soundscapes i'm sure the already mentioned plugins should do a nice job.
happy tweaking... |

check out Surge, LFO heaven, and super easy to use. You can get some pretty out their sounds if you route the LFO's to the right parameters.

I LOVE making effects.
Play with any synths you got. Try very high and low notes, add some LFO, delay, chorus etc... Try portamento with samples and so on. Play with every single knob you see, combine things.
It's all about finding and being creative. You don't need some specific synth/vsti for that. |

Sure, but, if you wanna start doing something with absynth the best thing you can do is look at those presets compositions, figure out what controls the pad, the sweep etc - This way you can start having your ideias pretty quick and with training you can get make what you want
But yes, it is complex

Absynth has few major differences compared to others synths. Once you know how to deal with modulation ranges (max value of a parameter represents whole modulation range) and once you understand its envelopes it becomes very straightforward synth and you can work very fast with it. Complexity then comes only in terms of Absynths flexibility... |
