I wonder if anyone knows how to make atmospheric evolving intro sounds. Some i hear seems to be very bassy. Any suggestion on how they could be made?

insteed of designing the synth patch first and then use fx on it, do the opposite it can work nice, set up a fx chain with big reverb and some modulation fx then program the synth..almost any sound could be used , from simple filtered noise too even a sine or triangle wave ..

you could program some drones too or use synth like absynth reaktor omnishpere...
largo and massive are also very nice with the wavetables and the complete modulations matrix

It's relatively simple and really fun to do these types of sounds.

Think of a single tone. Something you defined, a couple of osc's, a bit of FM, a LP Filter, a HP Filter, whatever. And than think about automating the tone and parameters over time, in this case during long times.
This can be easily achieved through envelopes: try using very long envelopes, on every parameter you can think of, and it will start getting interesting (probably not sounding good, but that tomes with time).

If you can get a synth with loop in the envelope you can have tons of modulation constantly going somewhere and morphing into something else.

Or use something like absynth. It has tons of features, and is awesome for pads, but is very overwhelming, and you end up not knowing what's happening and loose the control over the sound. I prefer to start from scratch.

I love atmospheric sounds, guess it comes from watching way too much sci-fi movies. As people said,it is not so hard to make.

Like what people above told, drench it in indicent amounts of reverb,I put 100% percent wet.I found that movement is important for those sounds, may it be filter opening up,or some vocoder automation,up to you.

What is more important I think,if you aren't dealing with drones ,but with pads ,it is important to have not single tone, but chords.Nothing makes your mood go up or down then same tones playing in mathematical relations with each other. Something that I've picked up,is the subject of tention and release.Minor chords make you feel "tension",they carry energy, energy that resolves nicely if you have major chords after.Or energy that evolves if you have several non major chordsone after another,to be resolved by major chord.
Classical Music is the ace in using this.Good example would be Strauss "Also sprach Zaratustra",which is the opening of Oddisey 2001.

You can hear the "ta ta" first chords which build up tension, those are minor chords. They are resolved in "ta ta"major chords. So you can play with that.

So,lond FX chain to insure movement (good movement don't have to be something complex,as a matter of fact, volume changes is excellent movement),most importantly good reverb with 100% wet,and layering several different sounds up.Chord them up,don't be shy to play around with chords and see how you feel with those (because mostly single notes don't give you the feeling of fullness or emotion instigation). As a matter of facts, many sci-fi compositors play around with the wierdest tetrachords to give weird feeling (google it up).

If you are just for weird drones and atmos,do the same but with samples, which you stretch in time .There is a good prog for that, called "paulstrech".You will not get something defined in pitch, but this programs makes really out of the world atmospheric sounds.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

Get omnisphere. Hunt around inside the Texture patches and samples browser, jump for joy and get to work.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

that's kinda like asking 'how to make psytrance', given the strong link between psytrance itself and the whole beautiful soundscapes around it.

i say inspiration/imagination comes first. (but oh well, cronox x3 and absynth 4, that's good stuff)

but they used many softwares i guess for athmospheric sounds, like metasynth and other softs used in sound design.
