well rolling depends on the length of the notes as well as the decay , sustain and release on the envelope, from the clip its likely there is a lot of release on the bass that producing that slightly rolling effect

Linking velocity to filter cutoff can sometimes help roll 1 cycle of KBBB.
Try giving either the first of the 16th bass notes a higher stab, or the last two. (Depends on the kick I guess)
Some people think rolling off the highs completely give a bass more drive. |

Hi!! What I do to get a rolling bassline is to sample the bass sound from the synth and load it into a sampler. this way you avoid phasing of the oscilators and each note will sound the exactly the same wav. then u can play with velocity in the sampler.
I bounce the a large note of saw wave (1/4). ESM in logic sounds so nice, however I use a Jupiter 6 analog saw wave.
then I load it into a sampler (EXS24) and sequence the 1/16 notes, but not where the kick is placed, so that will sound KBBB. what I do is to draw the bass notes with a length of 160 ms at the most, and the kick a bit larger.
In the bass sampler place the decay at 160 and the sustain a bit more, try a bit of release only to take out any noise u can hear like a noisy glitch. but try to keep it as short as possible.
the kick, place the decay a bit more than 160 ms, play with the release to take out cliping noise. (if necessary)
EQ for bassline; cut low untill 40hz with a 18db/8 slot.
cut hi freq till 5000 hz with a 18db/8 slot. then try around 250 to 400 to cut a bit (3 db more or less) with a not too small Q to take out "boxy" sound.
I insert overdrive to make it a bit more fat.
no compression.
EQ for kick: high cut at 5000 at 18 db/8, cut around 400 to take out box sound. no compression.
then I side chain kick & bass. this way I get a nice rolling bass line, pumping, clan and crispty.
u can check my tunes at www.myspace.com/juanma83
hope it was helpfull!!

@juanma:
if i get it right, you stack 8 hicuts/lowcuts with a slope of 18db?
that sounds quite brutal to me
what eq do you use for that?
listened to your tunes, i really like your style and from what i hear (myspace quality isnt that great) bassline sounds really nice... |

Hello!
I'm not sure what are u saying about the 3 pole filter, but what i meant to eq the bass is, I use one equalizer with the low cut freq, at 40 hz, with a slope of 18db/oct. and the hi cut freq at 5000hz with the same slope. this way u get the low bottom freq for the bass rolling properly with the kick. and the same with the high frequencies.
in the bass then, around 250hz, i reduce around 3 db with a quite wide Q.
u see what i meant? hope it was helpful.

Logic's channel EQ has a Q factor as well as slope on the hi pass filter. By default that Q factor is low hence there is no peak at the cut off point of the hi pass filter. Its a strange combo that works in conjuction, in Logic's channel EQ.
If you increase the Q factor (increase it to 100 and you'll get a massive peak at the filter's cut-off frequency, irrespective of the slope) and you start getting the peak Upavas speaks of.
So yeah, by default when using Logic's EQ you need not worry for such spikes when rolling the bottom end off.

Yep, you r right, I use a Q factor of 0.71, wich is the default factor and there is no peak.
when i take out the freq around 250, just 3 db with a Q factor of 1.20...
see ya!! |
