Thanks for the awesome replies everyone - really some food for thought!

The producer is Materia by the way.

It's much more than just a simple KbBB, but thanks for the responses mentioning that anyway.

It really is a nice sounding full and punchy bassline, similar to a lot of his recent tracks, but of course lacking some tweaking.

I feel that there is actually quite a few tricks going on in this wave, and it's refreshing to look at the sound from the perspective of the waveform to find the techniques, then use the techniques to shape the sound by ear.

I was thinking there could also be a pitch envelope at the start of each note which is what is causing the first cycle of the waveform to be so short. Similar to what happens with a kick, but to a lesser degree. It does actually make the bass sound more punchy, but Sylenth doesn't seem to offer precise enough settings.

I agree that it must be sidechained and not velocity to control the amp volume. Could be a bit of both though.

How is it possible to skew the waveform though? Can this be done in Sylenth?

Thanks again for the great replies!

try to use phase setting on the synths if you didn t to control where on the waveform the osc retriger, you will get the first cylce and inverted waveform like this . it s maybe around 270 degree flip just as random guess ..not really possible to know like this wihtout checking the synth...

try to adjust this in first when making the patch as it will influence everyhting from the filter freq to the envelop modulation amount the envelops setting ..

i think the thing that influence the most the sound on a bassline is the eq.. you often can get almost exactly the same sound from many different synths just cause of the way you eq these to get the result after , adjusting the synth and getting similar freq response and you will be very very close

+1

pitch envelope on Bass is of course possible and even used plenty, mostly on other genres. I can see why one would get the idea of that taking place, and I wouldn't be confident enough to say it isn't. But usually that's the case when the cycle looks the same despite being stretched and compressed (sort of), like a Kick does, if you take into account that the envelopes themselves also shape the waveform a bit, but shouldn't really mess with the shape of the cycles to much.
