Sorry to make a separate post for this, perhaps I should have put it in the bassline thread.. Apologies!
My issue is that I can't find the right vst or plugin to recreate this kind of waveform, which I got from one of my favourite producers.
What I'm having trouble with is getting the higher frequency attack at the start of the bass notes, and the smooth connections from the end of one base note to the start of the next.
Can anyone recommend a synth that you can control these parameters? I've tried Cronox2, Sylenth and EXS24 to try and make it, without much success..
Thanks in advance for any answers! http://www.soundcloud.com/architektnz

You (well I anyway) can't tell anything from that picture as to how the bass sounds...
Give us an audio example and yours and we ll be able to tell you more.

You should be able to use Cronox2 or Sylenth to create this kind of bassline,
Just keep tweaking until you get the results.
You can get help from other plugins like distortion (Quadrafuzz for example),
envelope shapers,
and of course compressors.
You can even cut and play a little with the audio wave itself to make it look like the samplewave you've posted.
Just keep in mind that reaching the EXACT same samplewave image DOES NOT exactly mean that it will sound the same, so you should get it as close as you can but then you should go back to trusting your ears to make it sound the same. |

processing change the wave form so you wont find find the synth that way ,but it don't look special . what you can see in that pic is that it s not high passed with a steep filter .. or very low.. and the phase is inverted compared to lot of synth (often dont like these saw without fliping the phase personally, these sound mroe agressive unpleasant unatural but it might depend the synth..)
i think there is also no multiband processing and not much saturation on it
look like a synth that output a saw close to a perfect saw , not one that look strange..but take all this with grain of salt.. |

also low sustain on amp envelop.. not all synth can fade the waveform like this.. so it could help you to find it but it s maybe a sample..
it would be a pain.. but put a 12db hp around 30/40 hz maybe.. and try synths till you get one that give you similar wave and envelop to find the synth..but its maybe hardware..it s maybe sample..so .. better not try this except if you have lot of time to loose
maybe try uhe zebra or tal noizemaker..i have seen plenty of times that waveform, maybe inverted saw is the right name? dunno.. and that could be cause of processing...i think future retro xs saw is kinda the same too.. but that could be said for so many synth.. |

To me it looks like a bassline pattern consisting of 3 notes, with the volume of the first dipped down by quite a few db's.
Just like a standard galloping bassline with the added low velocity first note to make it roll a bit.
Edit: I guess it looks a bit too smooth for being 3 notes played one after another:-)

Yarr, so some main things to keep in mind to get this bass:
1) as mentioned, the first note is very low volume, possibly due to side chain. Either way, that should help.
2) as mentioned, saw wave, very little processing, maybe a slight (like, -2db) notch in the eq somewhere in the 100-500 hz range.
3) THERE IS NO SPACE BETWEEN THE NOTES. the notes are running into each other. If you put the song into your DAW and low-pass it at 100hz, you should hear what sounds roughly like the ol' side chain swell bassline used all over techno, prog, and house for the past few years. The separation betwen the notes comes from the sound of the filter envelope clicking again.
So - You could make this very easily with Sylenth.
Init patch;
-Osc 1 is at Saw wave;
-Envelope 1 decay moved 15% up, to taste; link it to filter; set amount at 50% or so; to taste
-Amp envelope - Attack 0, decay 20%ish, Sustain 50%, Release a little bit up.
Midi pattern - the notes should be basically filling up the whole space on the grid...
Add a side chain to play with that first note; link velocity to filter in Sylenth if you want...
The main thing in this bassline, imo, that makes it stand out, is that there is no separation between the notes; often seen as a problem, some producers like this and can make it sound good.
Good luck...
EDIT: who is the producer? Biogenesis does this a lot with their full-on stuff.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

i think it s maybe low velocity on first note and not sidechain or maybe velo + a bit of sidechain. otherwise the tail of first note could probably rise in amplitude
also the trigger osc phase is adjusted on the synth cause the first cycle is very short compared to others.. or some specific samples picked with that attack.. |

just a saw but depending on the synth you use they will all have a slight variation in saw's offered as well as the controls over them
for this bass I used a single oscillator synth
Alien303
Midi pattern - the notes should be basically filling up the whole space on the grid...
Mine do not touch each other
I used the decay and sustain at around 40% each maybe 2-3% on the envelope
The filter is set low with 60 % rez and 35% saturation
first link is the bass itself second with a kick and FX but still no side chain

this bass, i can tell everything- and that´s what you have to do as well.
look, you see this bass is not eq, you can see it´s simple wave, it realy looks like esm from logic when bounced raw.
i cant tell you the tricks but you have to focus on audio, when it comes to making music.
get logic 5.5 so you can install it on windows, and sample the esm..
never give up, since there is a trick that You can make it. (audio is best.. ) think about tricks how you can get audio in your control best, and how to shape it perfectly. .
peace and blessings to your reality

the picture is not featuring a single note display...
its tipicaly a kbbb bass, where the first note have less velocity...
that signal is also wrong... the peaks should be faced down and not up...
you should invert the phase of the signal, otherwise you will not having so much "Punch" in the sound...
about how to get it? i dont know any Vsti this days that doesnt have a saw oscillator... but i would recomend zebra, as zebra lets you control exacly how the signal is, you can change a bassline in Zebra totaly by just changing the wave form apearence...
some people tend to waste a lot of time with compressors and EQ in order to make the perfect combo bass, but they miss the fact that they can archieve the bass they want if they handle to control how the wave form sounds, and sometimes depending on the notes your playing it will be necessarly need to change the wave form parameters...
here´s a screenshot of how i do it using zebra 2

It looks like sidechain to me, since velocity to amp volume would probably just bring the entire waveform down, but it would look similar to the others, and there seems to be another thing shaping the volume there. POM has mentioned that if it was sidechain, the wave of the first of three notes would probably rise on the (so called) tail, but depending on the settings on the sidechain compressor - the envelope of it - you can get it to behave like that if you want.
it looks like a phase inverted sawtooth wave. even though it resembles a sawtooth wave with not so much processing going on, there's definitely some bending going on that can be achieved many ways: some forms of saturation can do that, even on filter stage...
it's curious that the waveform is really very smooth between all the notes, like a constant thing. I bet the initial phase of the waveform was edited to.
if your bpm is set, you know exactly how long it takes for a 1/16th space on the grid and you can resample the notes to have that precise size, edit the waveforms to zero cross points carefully, thus producing the smoothness you see there from note to note.
@ Ricciardo "that signal is also wrong... the peaks should be faced down and not up... " > what makes you say that? it really depends on the context and this could have been the magic trick (inverting the phase) that made it sit nice with the kick or something (in my opinion)
the bending of the sawtooth can also be just the result of the filter closing, as it tends to (sort like) bend the waveform from what's produced in the oscillator to a sinewave when it's closed, so closing down the filter actually smooths the edges of it. check it with an oscilloscope and you'll see what I mean, when you have only the fundamental playing (check that on spectrum analyser), you usually get something close to or even a perfect sine wave (even without resonance).
some forms of distortion can produce a similar effect, for example, turning the wave into a pulse-like waveform when pushed to extremes, but gently bending the wave like on that picture when just a little of it is applied.
there's no symmetry on this waveform, the bending goes on positive phase, where the negative phase cycles look like a more regular (albeit phase inverted) wave. This could mean some kind of phase fx has been applied or a synthesizer that allows you to do that on the oscillator level. this could be made a zilion different ways tbo, and it's really kind of hard to approach producing a similar sound solely by the looks of the waveform.
