for myself I try to create midi patterns with good rhytmics and use this free vst to generate bleeps&blops...
mr alias 2... my new weapon of choice for wierd stuff going on in the background.
now I sample different takes with different patches and cut them up. mute some parts and keep some subtle or not so subtle variations... boom there you have quite some progression without actually changing the groove (even tho you can still do that too). Check out tom cosms tutorial on this.
Another nice thing is to use triplets for basslines or hooks during a break. I'm mostly moving notes of my original bassline around on the triplet grid, cut some notes, insert some - mostly trial and error till I get it right. But nice results 99.99%
another take on this... create a nice lead sound with your synth or vst - now duplicate it several times and adjust the adsr, might even throw some different effects on it (big reverb, flanger etc. comes to mind) ... now use one shots of the synths, make some rhytmic progressions and order them randomly or with care... awesome results without making it too cheesy.
