I have bought an 80gb internal hard disc to replace the 30gb one I have on my toshiba satellite A30 laptop. I am expecting it in the next few days.
Can someone tell me what I have to do to install windows on it?
1.I was thinking of using the recovery cds, but I am afraid that I need to have windows already installed to do this.
2. I also thought to make a ghost image, but I've read some guys had problems with this, because it will make my 80gb hard disc work as a 30gb (I think the same will happen with the recovery cds if they work).
3. Download a windows xp iso from dc++ and use the serial number from my existing windows xp.
I think the best option is the third. What I need to know about this option is if I need to use fdisc to partition my new drive, or if I can do this from windows xp install. Because fdisc can only do a fat16 or fat32, but I need to use NTFS.
Thanks for the help in advance. |

Set up your system to boot from disc (The CD Drive) in the bios. Then when you restart your computer it will see the windows disc in the drive, install windows and you are on your way.

How about partitioning and formating the hard drive? Will windows do that? |

If u don't want to reinstall all programs, there are programs that save ur whole windows configuration and all programs to cds/dvd.

Yeah, I know. Norton Ghost. But I've read that this way windows will think
I still have my old drive and I can only use 30gb out of 80gb.
That's why I am going with the option of clean install.
But, should I make a fat32 partition with fdisk and then do another one with windows NTFS, or can I do NTFS from the beginning with windows install cd? |

Who told you ghost image will work as 30G? bullshit man- anyway if you can try to connect both hard drives on a big computer(non laptop) of course you'll need the appropriate connectors but if you have it then it's the easiest way to do this,
NTFS of course is the preferred file system- anyway when it comes to data - make sure you did backups for your data- and think about taking it to some technician/computer store,
peace and good luck
