Try understanding what stereo is, and how many tricks there are for exploiting it!

A centered sound is nothing but an illusion, as a centered (mono) sound we usually have two speakers emitting the exact same sound source, and our brains perceive this as being "in the middle", but in fact it's coming from two places at once. To enhance the stereo spectrum of a particular sound, you just need to mangle a bit with each sound signal (left and right signals), making them slightly different.

Now, what to do to a particular side is where your investigation shall go: there are dozens of little things you can do.
You can try out my fattener VST plug-in ( http://vsts-leescott.rhcloud.com/ ) that simply delays one side by 1ms up to 60 ms (or 30, I don't remember), This simple technique can make a sound really fat: imagine you have a giant in front of you with a mouth that's 10 meters long: there's going to me a delay from the sound that comes from the left side of his mouth and the right side (because the mouth isn't a "perfect source"). You can do this trick with most delays and some panning utils, but I feel the VST is simple and compact.

Also, mid/side processing can really bring out your stereo, double tracking, chorus / phaser / flangers, different mic'ing techniques, and maybe the most important: the mix (if every sound bounces all over the place in stereo, than none is really that contrasting; if every sound is in mono and a wide stereo lead comes out, it may seem more prominent due to the contrast).

There are a bunch of videos from great producers on youtube showing little tips and tricks you can do in the signal to process the stereo signals, but the main thing is to understand the illusion, and how to exploit that illusion into doing what you want.

Btw, nothing I said actually limits you to software or hardware: both are equally capable; however in analog there may be a higher tendency for processing individual sides separately, due to mono outputs on analog gear, so you'd just need to connect one cable into a different equipment, and than pan each side on the mixing table; while in digital DAW's, the stereo signals are usually treated in pairs (but you can go mono, or make some sort of effect rack that splits each side and allows individual processing).

I usually use a mid-side processing plugin such as VarietyofSound's Rescue mk2, some kind of exciter or autopan (CamelSpace is great and has both), and of course careful mixing ;P

I usually render my works to stems for intensive mixing in Reaper, and sometimes I go a bit crazy, splitting stereo files into individual left and right mono channels, tweaking pans of each, and duplicating them and spreading them across the panorama...           .

Delay like ping pong or just more hard pan to the left is delaying to the right. Also reverb with delay can help.           - - - - -

I recommend at least one auxilliary channel with expansion effects and different eq on it than the original sound. You could also delay the aux channel. I made a vst for delaying time by milliseconds -
http://bassgnomes.wordpress.com/millidelay/.

I should really update it to have left and right delay. speaking of, this is a multiband delay/panner - http://www.concretefx.com/StereoBand.zip

for nice fft based expansion, check out smartelectronix levels, and kontrast vst -

Also, check out charseisis chorus... it's more than just a chorus, and you can get stuff to sound absolutely spacey with it.

You can get a wide sound by having a line of effects on one insert, but I recommend an aux, as you can use it to affect other sounds in the same manner, and open up more options.

to me it sounds like the has effect look it, either stereo delay, 1ms one side, up to 30ms (up to 10 works best for me) other. or just hard pan with one channel and sml delay.
