yeah, because it just works. after i released an album i got first wave of non local booking as Overdream. after EPs i got some parties too. but i released maybe 30 tracks on various VAs and it didnt give any result at all. so i decided to stop wasting tracks for VA actually (until someone like Parvati wants it).
as for making money from selling records (or, actually, NOT making money), well, i think the point is that all these musicians and other artists initially never were supposed to earn money from selling their recorded talent. live performance is what it was all about since day 0 when music appeared. technology provided humans the way to sell recorded music and for some time it was going strong indeed. but then technology went further and now it is all about showing the talent live again now, lets see who's actually really losing money? artists? musicians? not really. more like distribution corporations... managers. even big names never get real money from cds they sell. in think they dont have even 30%. anyways in the end an artist will get his booking and his money for the talent and skills he has, with or without recorded material.
but even when psytrance was still selling records 90% of the music was actually very good. not like today.

Ok, so let's suppose someone is ready to release an album - or at least feels like he is. Do you think it's good to contact some labels to get it released or just go for it by yourself? I mean, in the midst of all the stuff out there, how can one be sure people will listen to it? |

Long story short.
I released 2 albums on Ektpolazm as Disco Hooligans, for free.
That got us our first gig in Swiss and Holland.
Then did 3 EPs on Neurobiotic, one on Hyperflow, did a remix for Sheyba's Trance Africa Express, a few tunes on VAs as Disco Hooligans and 2 EPs and couple of tunes on comps as Martian Arts and Ohmnidrive, to get to a point where I still don't make nearly enough money to live on, but do get to travel and see nice places, nice people, have a dance and the extra money from gigs are sustaining a nice studio to make music in.
This is all I want right now (I don't want psy-trance to be my main profession/source of income), to be able to get studio gear, travel and go to parties, not only to play, but to listen to some great music from other people, dance to it and get some extra inspiration.

Well, I did not get booked here in the Vancouver area for nearly two years, and yes, I asked, I was in the scene here and elsewhere before 2007 as a dj, with gigs here ion Vancouver, Hawai'i in Europe, even Japan, North Africa...
In 2010 after a 3 year break of doing nothing but honing my production skills I started asking to play my very own music at events here and guess what, not one booking for a full on set, even though I have had 3 releases + one ambient release. This year someone finally booked me for Alluvium 2013 here in BC.
After my set and after many many compliments, people asked why I never played here in Vancouver before, my answer to them was because no one lets me play. So they asked, oh, how is that even possible,? My answer to them was this: I have no idea as I have asked the local promoters here before, but if you liked what you have heard and want to hear it again I suggest you talk to the promoters in this town and tell them you want them to book me, because your voices are much louder than mine.
You won't believe it, but today one of the promoters actually asked for a demo... if I get booked by him in the end? I don't know. Funny enough I did get booked elsewhere this year and some more gigs out of town are following.
Summa summarum: First make good sound, then once your live set is rock solid, get booked at one event even for free if has to be... If you can really wow the people and they ask where they can hear your music again, tell them to suggest to the local promoters that they should book you. And completely ignore the local politics, because if your music is good enough you can!!!
Ah and one more thing, I will start doing my own events, because that is the safest way to get bookings...

I manage a big rock bar in the center of Athens, which basically involves me getting piss drunk and headbanging, for a living \m/
I forgot to mention that I also swing a sword at power metal tunes...

Yes I am amongst the lucky ones, I am 36 and have been running this bar for 4 years (since I moved back to Greece from the UK, pretty much).
The situation in Greece is bad, but people are adapting to it, not all of them though...this is why I feel blessed to be in the position I am right now.
All in all, this situation is good for the spirit and the mind...people need to understand that happiness does not involve, buying things you don't need, with money you do not have, to impress people you do not like.

Listen to this man, as he raises his sword and strikes the unpure with flaming words of wisdom and clarity!
In some interview I read, someone ask Talamasca where the best parties were, and he focused on Greece, because the people there are so morally beat that they just want to party and have fun, regardless of other peoples opinions and judgement.

for liveacts? its realy easy man, because it clearly stands out to djs. have your demo-packages well prepared and allways with you. its 40% your music but 60% of how socialized you are. expand your social circle everytime you can. just be nice and friendly. then promote a liveact, and be authentic with your setting.
