attend local events, talk to the organizers of those events - send them mixes, etc
also, throwing local events is a good way to get a gig

thats how wannabe people think they have gigs...
if you start behaving like that, you will look like a needy person
and the event promotors will notice, so they will explore your intentions in perfoming at their events
as an artist i think people should care only to do what they like...
if your a producer, you should only concern about being a producer and make your music, then if your really good, people will notice you and call you to perform in their events
if your DJ, it might be a bit difficult, and perhaps, in the DJ scene its more likely that only the ones who speak with organizers, will have their dates, but... still, if you do enjoy mixing, then grab a mixer and cd players and have fun, expose your mixes online, again, if your really good, people will notice
but... please people, avoid to behave like complete atention whores, thats bad for everyone, incluiding you...
respect, its something you dont earn by knocking everyone´s door asking to atention, you only earn respect when people notice at you by them selfs...
thats why some people can get thousands per hour, and others would even pay to play...
at the end of the day, some are real artists, others only pretend to be...
if you want to be a real artist, then behave like one, do your stuff, have fun, try your best and good luck, if your good, you will have your prize someday!

Well, I did not get booked here in the Vancouver area for nearly two years, and yes, I asked, I was in the scene here and elsewhere before 2007 as a dj, with gigs here ion Vancouver, Hawai'i in Europe, even Japan, North Africa...
In 2010 after a 3 year break of doing nothing but honing my production skills I started asking to play my very own music at events here and guess what, not one booking for a full on set, even though I have had 3 releases + one ambient release. This year someone finally booked me for Alluvium 2013 here in BC.
After my set and after many many compliments, people asked why I never played here in Vancouver before, my answer to them was because no one lets me play. So they asked, oh, how is that even possible,? My answer to them was this: I have no idea as I have asked the local promoters here before, but if you liked what you have heard and want to hear it again I suggest you talk to the promoters in this town and tell them you want them to book me, because your voices are much louder than mine.
You won't believe it, but today one of the promoters actually asked for a demo... if I get booked by him in the end? I don't know. Funny enough I did get booked elsewhere this year and some more gigs out of town are following.
Summa summarum: First make good sound, then once your live set is rock solid, get booked at one event even for free if has to be... If you can really wow the people and they ask where they can hear your music again, tell them to suggest to the local promoters that they should book you. And completely ignore the local politics, because if your music is good enough you can!!!
Ah and one more thing, I will start doing my own events, because that is the safest way to get bookings...

Building a network is the only way to get gigs imho, provided you can do a decent job.
You won't get many booking just by making music. You need to promote yourself a lot. If quality was the only reason for a booking, the line ups on festivals would look really different. I am afraid it is more about politics than talent.

You seem to be getting some nice gigs, so all you had to do was release an album, and organizers would contact you?
networking also seems logical i guess you mean supergroover also getting to know promoters? im horrible socializer but afraid this is something maybe need to get good |

I did try to get gigs by contacting promotors n stuff but i always felt dirty in the end. And it never worked for me )
So now im just letting my music speak for me and if somebody likes it enough to book me for a gig then im a happy dude.
Once you get your first gigs try to make contacts with other djs and artists on that party, maybe you can help them and maybe they can help you

Ahem, suffices to say that what I said about ignoring politics was meant purely sarcastic
