what ever works for you , if it get you the sound you re after but the fondamental is very important in the low end imo , listen some techno and a/b ,some psytrance have no energy in the low end resulting in thin sounding mix .

yes :/

maybe cut bellow at 30hz to remove the really low rumble.
then cut a few dbs on the fundamental, in order to be felt but not heard.

lol cutting the fundamentals of the bass would totally kill it, its no bass anymore.

cutting the very low end is ok. (~30Hz)           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

yeah ive tried cutting fundamentals and it just does not sound right....
its better to have the fundamental at about 50hz + or - depending on what key your on and add a sub sine imho
also to get that kind of bass most artist use more than 1 layer...I asked aquatica once how he made his bass and he told me that he uses anywhere from 3 to more layers just for bass!!!

usually I remove everything bellow 40-50.

note F0. this is a low shelf at 40hz..
at 30hz there's some rumble on this bass (cronox patch) at least on my monitors

the fundamental top was carved, but the body is still there.
If I raise it one octave, then it is not noticeable, of course. and messing with the fundamental total kills the bass...

I usually find the root frequency for whatever key the song is in (anywhere from 30 - 50Hz) and then high pass a bit below that (to avoid the -3dB of gain at the location of the pole being at the root freq.)

Do you guys usually find that low SHELVING as opposed to high PASSING round that freq results in cleaner sound? Or does it just depend on the source of the wave? Maybe this is a silly question.....           --

it depends
on this case I prefer the sound of the low shelf instead of the low cut (HP). it's sounds more smooth and natural.
the pro-q hp sounds hard.

on ableton eq, I use hp.

@trevon

i wouldnt cut/shelf that fundamental peak...
we could descuss that more but checking some pro tracks
(cutting out the bass) gives you a better idea.

and your basscurve at the span looks uncommon to me...
but you know, use what sounds best to you.
i dont know what speakers/room u use, but maybe they are the rumble xD

oh, and using a HP filter, cuttin your fundamental in that area (too much) producing strange sounds seems obvious to me.

@orgytime that curve is a simple cronox patch, clean.
maybe it is because is in a low octave.

if I raise it one octave the harmonic peaks are more prominent, but is sounds more fullonic
boost the root note and cut on the first two muddy harmonics?

your basses are pretty neat. can you show a curve of a EQed bass of yours?

hp at 30 leaves more meat on the low end. it is noticeable with some kicks.

Just my personal experience from parties:If you do fullon bassline, for the love of god don't sub bass it.On the PA it sounds like freeking 4 kicks in a row, this shit aint tight ,aint ear pleasing.
Getting chest bumb once four beats is more then enough. As a matter of fact, place that bassline higher, very much aprecciated .           From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)
