I was wondering, all laptops come with Vista, so OK, you decide to take it and install your old copy of XP on it.

Did any of you try that?
I am wondering, do you need to complete format the hard drive or Just install from the XP CD when inserted as boot.

Thanks.           www.myspace.com/enertopiapsy

don't know but usually windows doesn't want to downgrade, so format, i think, or install on another partition           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I used to format my laptop using some bootdisks from Windows 98(so I format from DOS).

But as new laptops does not come with disketes drive, I also can´t install any other OS than the pre-instaled one.

I would like to know also how can I format a laptop...           LOADING...

ALWAYS format the hard drive that an OS is going to be installed on. If you need to save something you already have on the C: drive, copy it elsewhere first.

A proper XP Home/Pro installer CD should always give the option to boot from disc, give you the option to format, and then install XP.

Corporate editions of XP may not have a boot though.

You might have to tell your system BIOS to change the boot order to make sure it checks the CD drive before trying to boot the HD.

As far as going back to XP from Vista... like Psyaudio said, you need to make sure your laptop model has has XP drivers available for download, and download them before you format since your LAN driver might be one of the ones you need.

Laptops are extra specific about drivers, lots of "stock" XP drivers don't work for all kinds of basic motherboard and peripheral functions, and if a laptop is made with Vista in mind, they might not have written XP drivers for it.

Vista needs time, if u do some resourcing ull find out that theres nothing different from XP, its just pure cosmetics with 1-2% kernel modification (just to make things unstable)

im still a W2K User, and will allways be, though i use XP , damn MSN           PSYKS

Meta is correct. I'd also like to add:

- XP install allows you to delete & create partitions & reformat before the OS gets installed, so you can just do it then. I recommend always using NTFS at this point.

-If you order from someone like Dell, you should be able to get it with XP on it, you may just need to talk to a human to do it, rather than order online. Or, you could try ordering it without an OS at all.

Just like the jump from win2K to winXP, I'm sure there is a ton of new code 'under the hood' in Vista. Most of the new features seem hardly worth the upgrade, but as mentioned in another post, better handling of multi-core processors might be worth it.

In my case, i still can´t install other OS than the original one...

I changed boot order, and Windows XP Home(the original is Pro) even start the instalation... But suddenly it crashes, and start WIndows Pro again...

I guess theres´s a little trick to do this, at least for my HP laptop.....           LOADING...

I installed Vista, found out that it blows... so what I did was:

1: Save all work on CDR, from the main harddrive.
2: Put in winXP boot cd (make sure BIOS is set to run CD/DVD, as primary boot device)
3: Under installation, choose what harddrive you want XP on, and choose to format the drive (Dont use Fast format)
4: Install XP as usual from there...

There is a program that allows to you create custom Windoze XP & 2K CDs, and you can, among other things, turn a nonbootable one into bootable. I used it for that purpose and it worked 100 %.

I don't remember the name of the program, but you should be able to find it with Google.

I think that's XpLite, that's what's used to make all those hacked TinyXP versions.

However that's not really going to solve the lack of XP support for a new Vista-built laptop.

SMS, that sucks, wish I knew what to tell you. They definitely don't want to make it easy. I had a similar problem trying to switch XP versions on my HP laptop, and even though I could get it to install and boot, there were still specific drivers that would refuse to work with the Lite version of XP I was trying to install, so I went back to the OEM Windows.

The point to take away from all this is that there are never any guarantees with laptops when it comes to changing OS, so if you have Norton Ghost or any kind of drive backup software, make a disc image of your HD on an external just in case before you set off on any experimental adventures.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604
