I saw there isn't any "mother of all pads thread". I like to build all of the sounds i use alone with a synth, but i find difficult to make a pad. Of course i can try to reverse engineer presets, that's what i do. But do you guys know basic principles on how to make a pad ? Like the basic principles on how to make a kick are to pitch modulate a sine i mean.
Ps : i would like to do this clean classic pad style :
Well as Medea said, if you want to make pad use ADSR especially "release" which affect directly on length's note. After I think you could use LFO and filter to make this kind of pad but just a little. But it's difficult to make good one. Takes time to make one original.

-shape the highs for a softer sound
-USE CHORDS not just single notes (very important)
-ADSR thing alrdy mentioned

Often when it comes to pads I'll have a flick through some presets then just modify the one I think has the nearest texture to what I'm looking for.
Then I usually EQ that quite aggressively then use shit loads of reverb.
Band pass filters are pretty good, then to get some movement without adding a whole load of unecassary harmonics you can runn all the through a notch filter.
I'm not to fancy with pads really. I like to keep them simple so they do the job, but not attract to much attention to themself.

for pad ,ambiance... fx are a big part of the sound, pad are very easy to make when you have a good fx chain behind while tweaking the synth ,even a init patch with turning 3 or 4 knobs could make a good pad
shape a sweet atack, medium release, and alternate the sustain level....
after this, work with cut off filters....
later that you can change de phase, the lfo, chorus, tune, detune....
a good tip is to always setting the master level to - 3db, - 4db before doing this process
boom.... pad is one of the most psychedelic staff....

One of my favorite ways to make a pad in ableton:
Create a couple of return tracks, one with reverb, one with a simple delay on it. Take whatever sound source you like, turn up the reverb or delay send on it, then also enable the return track to send back onto itself - crank all the knobs up and you have something that is completely different from the source material
I just did this with a little laser stab noise I created with Operator and it turned into a kind of buddhist-monk style noise-chant - JUST MAKE SURE TO PUT A LIMITER ON YOUR MASTER!!!! feedback loops with sending a reverb/delay onto itself can get really nasty at times so don't blow your monitors.

this^^ also some interesting pads are done with layers..
there is a tutorial floating around somewhere by this guy Anodyne. (he produces amazing dark industrial breaks!)
he shows how he used downpitched "field" recordings..
reversed cymbal hits
and synths
to create this amazing evolving pad..
he doesn't go to much into technical details but proves how being creative with all techniques at once can produce those amazing thick sounds were after.
