I´m just a beginner in chill-out djiing... I usual work in a bar or in private parties...

but I have doubts...can you help me? many people says that chill-out can´t be worked, they said that we cannot remix the tracks in our sets... what do you prefer, pure tracks or a worked sound with a good mix´s?

like in everything that u try to mix , story is most important, and everything has a rhythm even beatless music, like kukan says, find the flow... and a good story u want to tell           ill push u over the edge, and will be smiling when u cant take anymore, at that point ill push a little harder till u experience true psychdelica

i thing knowing the sounds is important, which sound or track is relevent to the next track and so on,theres a cd called "music for a busy head" by green nuns of the revolution(under a different guise),i´m told that each track is just a different sound that resonates with each body chakra,it sounds like a good ambient album,it´s nice to build a flowing set that really takes people(and yourself)on a journey, you can go up and down and really tease people(i love doing this!!),don´t get caught in the ´upbeat´ambient trap now that a lot of people seem to be doing:you end up playing continuas downbeat dance music that isn´t really ambient, tis true that beatless music has rhythm and chill out CAN be worked and you can go down as many avenues,if not more, than a trance/dance set,it´s important to play how you feel and how you sense the crowd is feeling, not what people tell you,if you have the first shpongle and 2nd yeti albums, play the first yeti track and just as the gurgly bit starts to kick in mix in the start of the 1st shpongle1 tune, tis an awesome way to start a set, there you go,have fun xx;O>

you make what u want ...all the sound u like !

for my case .. i let the flow

for the rock steady set we done some wave with sample of voice and hip hop or funk... because the rock steady have a big probleme :
they are only 2 minute long and they cut very quickly

everyones pretty much summed it up there! i agree and find personaly that when playing a chill track, just close your eyes and listen deeply and let your mind think of what would sound good with it...hopefully it will be a track you have got and if not then get it!!!

1) You are the story teller

2) A track is a story itself, but when arranged in a set it can be part of a totally different story.

I also started playing chill recently, and to my amazement I discovered that I can also beat-mix dub. although there is no beat to fall on, you basically mix by feeling the groove and not by hearing the 2 kickdrums one on another. Its harder, but so much more satisfying than playing trance.

It all depends on the type of chillout you are playing. If you are playing pure ambient sounds with no beat or bassline (groove), then there is nothing much to do than try to create the feeling of space by interwining the intro and outro of the tracks.
If, however, you are playing groovier stuff like dub, lounge, downbeat or funky groove, you can beatmatch the tunes as I explained above.

Hey Technopayaso, nice post there. You are right about that Music for a busy head cd. Its excellent. That's become my default cd when I need to stabilise a vibe, whether my own fractured headspace or in a party context. I completely agree with you about the upbeat ambient trap thing. I think to really explore the vastness of a psychedelic soundscape, you have to be willing to let the beats drop and float right out into the void. I'm not saying I don't play ambient music with beats, but all this basically downtempo trance can get a bit repetetive. Nice to duck and dive through varied territory
