in sample cd they are usally more than enought compressed and ruined for the settings it really depends the sample ,you can try small ratio with slow attack and not a lot of gain reduction or compress in a group with some other drum sounds to glue them , for exact setting no one can tell you ,it s really a matter of taste and the sample you re using.

lol, I disagree with the 'no' school.

I compress seven shades of shit out of mine.

Very high ratio, very fast release, play with threshold and attack to see what sounds best.

And then I get out the EQ. You (subjectively) want to EQ out the brassy metallic freqs, and resonant ringing.

And don't kill the low freqs automatically, then can sound really nice, and give the hats far more bite in the mix.

More often then not, I'll have very subtle flanging and phasing going on as well.

Worth saying also, that the compressor I use mainly for drums and perc is the in built in RMIV - this comes before the ADSR, so I'm not increasing tail length or anything.

Doing it this way I reckon gives me a lot more control over the sound

But there is more then one way of doing everything, so go with whatever works for you           .

actually percussion doesnt need compression
if you arent recording drummer, then just eq each element and makeup levels.

RM-IV rocks for drums! only bad thing is that u dont have an attack knob imo...but you can get really nice results with it, also with longer release (max 100-150 imo) for some hats that suite it!

ps: for some cleaner highs I would also cut them a bit and put an exciter after that...           https://soundcloud.com/hazak
