Hey guys, My main problem is to produce hard squelch leads such as:
Alienn vs A-Mush - Demon Laboratory (6:20)
Yesterday night I stated a build up to a track and wanted to try putting a lead with that, but my problem is that I don't know how to make them really work hard and give this powerfull drive and feeling...
Please:
DONT mind the mix (there's almost no EQ's or anything)
DONT mind the master (there isn't)
DONT mind the kickbass... it was really was just do demonstrate
I need some tips on how to get better power leads like - do i need to layer them? how? I'd like to hear so tips...
Thanks alot!

Those are the things I usually do but I wanted to know about tricks and tips to make the LEAD More powerfull and driving
like
-write lead with LFO>cutoff >> export to audio
-duplicate lead with pitch changes, cut High freqs and play with octaves...
Etc etc...
those things I usually do but It doesn't work so great with my leads still

i dont like that sound too much, But maybe used with moderation but there are too many tracks with those kind of annoying sounds, the "wake up, wake up" is cool
Btw use stereo delays and chorus to make it big, and distortion to make it cut through and sounds powerful.... also you can do like Orgytime say, bandpass or try formant filter, i guess you do these sounds in Disco DSP Discovery....
Also playing with cutoff, I,e automate it so it moves around will make it sound more powerful,

That lead in particular are starting to get very old imo. Getting the vb1 over used stamp on it Mayby time to move on and discover other sounds perhaps

Humor me. How would you synthesise this lead sound? Sawtooth? Some FM? There's some pitch bending, right? So a pitch envelope? Distortion? I've been trying all night and I just can't seem to get it.

bandpassfilter, cutoff-->lfo.
bounce, cut etc...
Try that and double track it, then bounce out the same riff an octave below without any filter modulation and keep it centered, should sound really fat.

Classic Hitek lead eh?
It is quite nice, i've always liked this sound... so toxic.
Well you have the answers already but i will throw in my recipe for this kinda sounds.
First you need a nice FM synth for the task... discovery is nice, synth1 is a sharp knife... albino and surge can serve too as well ableton's operator, and of course if you have any hardware synth it can be much more of benefit. Make sure you know how to use it, read the manual and have it around just in case.
First, the ingredients:
- 2 OSC, sawtooths is the standard, squares can be used too for different timbre
- FM synthesis
- Distortion
- HighPass / BandPass Filter
- LFO
- Unison
- Chorus & Delay for dressing
- And very important: Portamento / Glide
Procedure:
- Use one of the OSC to modulate the other in FM fashion; lower modulator by 1 or 2 octaves and set the FM amount to taste, make it harsh but not that much.
- Envelopes should be to taste, i like to use zero attack, zero delay, full sustain and no or very little release for these sounds... filter can be snappy or lose, your call.
- Set the filter to HP or BP (each render distinct results), and give the bitch some resonance so it squeals effectively just not that much or it will annoyingly whistle.
- Make a free LFO control the filter's cutoff in a moderate amount at a suitable rate, use your ears so it gets fluctuating just enough to give character or you can also automate manually the cutoff in a particular pattern / shape u like.
So far you should have a nice harsh fm lead with filter trick... sounds good but not like what we are looking for.
- Next for the mind bending effect just set the patch to mono and turn glide / porta knob to taste... for most synths you don't need more than 45% make it time constant so it happens all the time from one note to the next, explore your synth's portamento settings, it should be fast but not so much, enough to actually hear a note bending into the next.
- The previous step + effective riff will give you the sound you look for... listen carefully at your example track. It has all this crazy pitch changes, instead your own sample is a single tone drone like "lead"... you don't want this... you want notes spaced along 2 or 3 octaves... and an interesting scale to play with... use one with diminished seconds. Combine short and long notes and make some overlap.
- Add distortion on top of your synth or if it allows built in filter disto is good. Chorus, flangers, phasers and such can be nice.
- Unison for phatness and delay for deepness...
There you have your own killer squelchy screamy lead.
Forget about cloning channels and doing strange shananigans for obtaining depth in your sound, some might work but this is trying to correct the sound after it is being made... you have to work the core of it. Go to your synth and spend several hours tweaking parameters i just told u in minimal amounts so you perfect your lead and you understand it is there inside the sound where your mind and hands should.
For extra character you can try linking another LFO to the FM amount or automating it by hand... it can be nice too.
Good luck... and welcome to the forum

cheers!
Most off putting and cheesiest sound in trance, ever. Even the old blippy Infected Mushroom hi pitch square patches are not this bad.
One of the main reason's this style of music makes me cringe...but that's taste for ya.

Funny i got the same answer from WT when i asked for this sound... why not limit to help others achieve what they are aiming for?... i learned a lot when i was in this task.
It is always the same in this forum when someone asks for a typical psytrance sound... overused, old, blah... blah.. find new sounds by yourself. lol.
