Yes I agree that listening to your favourite songs and understanding the structure is the best way to start.

If you're using tips from your favorite tunes, make sure they're not all psytrance. You'll come up with much better and more unique ideas when you combine influences from different genres of music (electronic and non electronic). Try producing some different styles as well and use ideas from those.
I find it more rewarding to implement an idea I like from a jazz/classical/rock/etc piece into an electronic composition.

I agree with what's being said above. My first finished track song started out as a copy of the structure of an Infected Mushroom track("Sailing in the Sea of Mushroom" I think) but I got some ideas of my own pretty quick.
I generally go for sections of 32 or 64 bars each centered around some new ideas. I try to keep it flowing from part to part but still keep it really interesting and fresh.
One thing that can be done to keep it coherent is to use similar lines and phrases throughout the track. But with different instruments and in different places in the scale. This keeps some melodic ideas consistent through the track.
Another thing I do to creat variation is to try and have different groves for different parts. Keeping the exact same beat for an entire track can be quite boring even if everything else is different.
As for keeping a consistent whole and presenting a theme. Try to find a basic idea for the track. Is it going to be an atmospheric track? Is it going to be dark or more upbeat? Staying in the same key often helps but if you can do cool modulations and stuff that's cool too. And as I mentioned having some recurring melodic themes and phrases can keep it flowing.

In Cubase.. I always first compose different parts with vst... then export to separe wavs and put on a one folder and start splitting the folder (moving sections). |
