Hi guys!
How do I assign a parameter, say... cut-off freq, to a knob on my MIDI controller in Cubase?
Thanks |

Go to device and device setup, If Generic remote is not available click the add button, its a +
the choose from the list Generic remote
Now go to that tab, choose correct in and out, If your midi controller has its own label, choose it or otherwise the soundcards ins and outs if midi goes that way.
Now the lower list is where you choose device and parameter to control.
When you choosed for example the Vst synth you want to control, you will find in the column device all the parameters, most of the time labeled by their correct name, choose and than go up to the upper list, its here you choose midi channels and midi CC, Check the button midi learn and twist the knob you want to assign, in Cubase SX 3 it can be a bit buggy and you have to press the button a few times and twist before it learns...
then press apply or just okey and you are good to go,
I hope this helps, i dont have cubase infront of me right now so just typing out of memory, Hopefully someone correct me if i said anything wrong..
Good luck...
Btw many synths has midi learn, its a nifty feature, in which you dont have to take the generic remote route...
In FL studio, Reason and Ableton these assigns are much easier

Thanks for the resoponse. I just switched back to Cubase after having used Orion for a while. It was much easier to do this particular thing in Orion.
I'm using Cubase 6, and the synth in question in this case is Gladiator.
So, if I map say knob 1 to cut-off, am I only able to map single parameters on one instrument per knob? In other words, I could assign diffrent parameters from various instruments to one knob in Orion, and if I had the option checked that only the track in use recieves data, than there wouldn't be any conflicts. I hope I explained that clear enough.
Thanks again for the response! |

I think you would define a midi channel for diffrerent tracks , then use quick controls.

hmmm....... I looked at the quick controls earlier, and didn't see anything relating to the actual synth, just things like the insert parameters..... but I'll check again, you could be right. I kind of hope so, because Freeflow's response was more what I was expecting, but it seems a bit too tedious just to get the filter cut-off to respond when I wiggle a knob, and I had hoped it had gotten easier. I only checked it quickly on my way out the door this morning though, so I could have missed something.

ok, just checked it out to see about the parameter list under quick controls..... and the problem was that when I checked it out this morning, I looked under the quick controls on the vst track for Gladiator. However, those controls relate to plug-ins added to the fx chain on the ch., and the ch. parameters itself.
The Gladiator parameters however, are listed on the actual MIDI ch. sending out to the synth, which makes sense since this is where the MIDI data would be stored.
I'll give it a whirl, and see how it goes. Thanks a lot for the response guys. |

ok, so the quick control sends the MIDI data to the VST. However, I can't seem to get it to link to a knob from my MIDI controller (EMU X-Board49 in this case). There is a QC learn button on the ch., but this seems to do nothing. I punch the button, turn the knob, and nothing......
I can see from the MIDI meter that the knob is sending info, but that's all.
Anyone have any more input? |

I thought I'd post the result, just in case anyone needs to know the same info.
I got a response from someone on the Steinberg forum, and the answer is pretty easy. So, this should work a charm for anyone who needs the same info:
1) Go to device set-up under the Devices menu, and locate quick controls. Then, you can click 'learn' and map the 8 quick control slots to various knobs, etc. from your MIDI device.
2) Hit 'Apply' + OK to make them active
3) Go to the quick controls on your MIDI ch., and activate quick controls.
4) These 8 slots co-respond to the knobs you selected in the device set-up menu. Select which parameter you want effected, and it will bend to your will. |
