+1. If you can't work in such an enviroment, identifying your room's/monitor's weak points and compensating for them, is extremely important.
THE most important thing though, is to simply listen to your favourite music and train your ears so that you can recognize a good sound that works well in a mix, when you hear it.

train your ears to recognize the mistakes.. man this sucks big time, but its the only way imo too
my ears are trying to figure out the 100-400HZ all the f^%$NG time , bellow the 100HZ theres only bass+kick, untouched in any reason (except from hipassing sometimes )..

There's no short cut to training your ears and in a way, you will always train them and will never reach perfection.
But that is the whole beauty of it if you ask me.

To aid first question i'd say know ur tools...
Like you asked of vanguard, i can tell u it is a nice plug but not the best sounding... if you want to get more grit of it use external distortion and maybe some external fx
Some vsts sound better than others or better at certain points this is why you have to learn them well, vanguard has nice filter with strange shapes like M and X it gives nice feeling when sweeping sequences.
