And music shouldn't be a luxury, it's a necessity. You shouldn't be charged for a necessity.

I assume that your are trying to make a joke perhaps?
Food, water, air, shelter are the necessities in life.
MP3 players, Televisions, cars, cellphones music etc. are most definitely luxuries.
If in any doubt, some time spent trekking in India or Nepal should help to clarify matters very clearly.

You are also right. The only necessities of life are the ones that allow you to survive... Those are real necessities.
But we aren't primates. There still are lots of places (like you said India) that live like that, but there are lots that don't.. And regarding to the price music is now a days, It's too high.. In Portugal the minimum wage is 400€ and a normal cd (madonna for example) goes around 20€. A pack of cigarretes cost 3€ and a beer costs less than 1€.
I think music is a necessity of the civilized man. It develops your brain intellectually and relaxes you from the day by day stress.
And nowadays alot of people download music, especially kids, because there is no way they can get it anywhere else. CD's are to expensive, and to download them is free... Thats reality.
But still trance artists make it out there, but playing live... Thats something you cant download and the show is supossed to be unique.
I don't want to offend you, sorry but I don't make a living on music.
Peace

Supposed to be, yes... although most of the live acts you like are pulling the wool over your eyes in this matter, in the same way this guy is, at Glade last weekend:
http://www.paulmaple.com/shoots/glade_festival_07/Origin%20Stage/slides/IMG_9826.html
From his computer I can tell you he has his set totally pre-arranged in Cubase. He has no controller, and there are no plugins open on the screen. His hand is on the mixer purely for show. He has no interaction with the music other than maybe to take the bass out on the DJ mixer during the break. I don't know who this guy was (and maybe I guess I should apologise a little for 'outing' him like this but I just found the photo and it's a great example; perhaps he'd made special mixes of every track for this set but frankly I doubt it) but his live set is just like 95% of all other psytrance liveacts out there. Totally identical to the last time he played and, quite frankly, a con as far as 'live' music is concerned, which is supposed to be the reason why live acts get paid more than DJs, even if the DJ is playing all his own productions.
Next time you see a photo of your favourite live act playing, look carefully.
Oh dear, I seem to have sidetracked myself (and the thread) again. Sorry for the offtopic, I guess I got on a bit of a rant...

Hehe. I doubt that would contribute much to the discussion. I'll just say that the dutchies around here probably recognise him.

What does constitute a live show?
Do we need to be hand sequencing in real time?
Or is playing clips automajically in Ableton enough (of course, this is a de facto, 'Live' show ba doom tsk).
Strikes me, one man's live is another man's pre-recorded - not that I'm saying having a pre-recorded set is in any shape or form live.

IMHO
Playing clips in Ableton live would be a semi live show, since you have a combination of pre-recorded and realtime music.
Laptop playback is definitely not a live show.
Laptop playback with at least 50% of the music manipulated on hardware and/or software synthesizers and/or aucoustic instruments would be a semi live show.
Laptop playback and live mixing would be PA engineering.
Laptop as softsynth host and/or hardware synths and/or acoustic instruments would make a live show.

I see a live act nowadays like a pre arranged set on a laptop, like Colin said. If the music is really played live, than it should be called a live concert.. But ableton live makes the most "live" pre-recorded set... If you check the link of Tom Cosm above he has videos of himself playing live in live, and I can say, Its a lot more live than most lives out there...
(In 2004 in Rock In Rio, Portugal, Britney Spears sang 2 songs and did playback on all the other, its not just trance)
But I think one essential component in lives (trance) is a loop sampler, so you can try and make it a little techno by playing the loop and modifying it... kind of like how I heard Goa Gil played a couple of years ago...
